Five Surprisingly Toxic Foods

Posted: 19/02/2013 23:00

While most people know that cakes and chocolate aren't great for your health, there are other seemingly healthy foods whose dangerous properties slip under the radar. While it is unlikely moderate amounts of these foods will harm you, in large quantities - or in certain conditions - they may do more damage to your health than you think. Here are some of the most toxic common foods.

Mushrooms

While mushrooms available in supermarkets are pretty safe to eat, mushroom fans need to be careful about what species' they are consuming as many varieties can be highly dangerous and even fatal. Around 100 species of mushrooms are said to be dangerous to humans, with symptoms ranging from headaches to seizures or even death. In 2010 a small variety of mushroom called the Little White was blamed for an estimated 400 deaths in China.

Rice

It is impossible to dispute that rice has many great health benefits. However, like with most things, it may be best eaten in moderation due to its reportedly unsafe levels of arsenic. One study has suggested that rice contains about 10 times more arsenic than other crops and this is often higher in rice from Bangladesh, India, China and the USA. Studies have also reported concern for the levels of arsenic in rice milk and baby rice. While there is relatively little risk of the odd bowl of rice causing any long lasting harm, the consumption of high levels of arsenic has been linked to cancer.

Nutmeg

Perhaps one of the most immediately dangerous foods on this list is also one of the most surprising, and that is the common store cupboard spice, nutmeg. Although, like many of the foods on the list, nutmeg does have reported health benefits, it can also be extremely dangerous when taken in large doses. Containing a toxic substance called myristicin, moderate proportions of nutmeg can cause hallucinations, while larger doses can cause side effects including convulsions, palpitations, nausea, dehydration and death.

Farmed Salmon

We may be constantly urged to eat more oily fish, but research has suggested that consuming farmed salmon may not be the best way to do it. A study found that 13 different toxins - including PCBs, which have been classed as a probable human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - are at much higher levels in farm-raised salmon than in wild salmon.

Potatoes

Potatoes may look innocent enough, but studies show they contain toxic compounds known as glycoalkaloids, which affect the nervous and digestive systems, causing headaches, weakness, confusion, diarrhoea and vomiting amongst other things. Poisoning from potatoes occurs very rarely but fans of the popular vegetable should take measures to protect themselves by avoiding potatoes with sprouts - which tend to have a higher concentration of glycoalkaloids - and those which have turned green.

The problem with rice from Bangladesh is the concentration of arsenic in the soil. It was reported some time ago that huh...no pun here, well-wishing aid workers drilled wells that only recently drew forth arsenated water.

I don't know if the contamination afflicts other foodstuffs from Bangladesh.

Thousands of Russian people love going to forests to pick mushrooms during summer and autumn months, but not many people (relatively) get poisoned from them.

Russian children are often taught how to chose edible mushrooms when picking or buying them from others. Although in this country you can't buy your mushrooms from 'forest mushroom pickers' directly as in Russia, it would be good if children were taught this (edible vs non-edible mushrooms) in school as well.

Saying that, I never had any trouble with mushrooms buying them regularly from UK supermarkets. However, I got poisoned once with mushrooms in Russia!

The first rule with mushrooms is if you cant peel it don't eat it. The adulteration of our food is no new thing it has been progressive for the last fifty years as food producers and massive supermarket chains have made the populace more malleable in what the will accept as being food. Nutrition took a back seat as the food manipulators became more brazen in the rubbish they found we were willing to accept as food. Oh my god...that's messed up my salmon, mushroom and rice mash! Can I just lose the nutmeg?

And just how much nutmeg do you need to eat for dehydration and death to occur?.... And could you?!
Arsenic in rice,.... well when the western world wanted cheap chemicals it was not only cheaper but a whole lot safer not to produce it in your own back yard?.....
Too much water can be fatal, too much oxygen can be fatal, too much of pretty much everything will not be good for you,....
Take the artical with a pinch of......Salt?.... Oh no, too much of that will kill you too!

There must be money to be made flogging this kind of alarmist pap.

Sad reflection of our society and of Huff for that matter.

The picture used is also about as gross as gross can be.

Mushrooms, usually considered as Agaricus species? Those shown are Boleti, which is playing very safe, there are no seriously poisonous cap-fungi with pores to mistake for them. Much better to have shown something more doubtful, such as a button mushoom, which could be almost anything, and a very few of those things deadly.

Looks like I'm good to go then, smoked salmon starter followed by curried horse n whole mushrooms with rice, a good sprinkling of nutmeg in the mixed spice accompanied by a side dish of green potato chips, sounds like a balanced diet to me.

Pffft Re-enforcing the Uk's rampant mycophobia again i see. No one in the world is more scared of mushrooms than us brits! The fact is there are many species of mushroom than are edible, few are inedible and even fewer are actually deadly. Sure you shouldn't go out and pick mushrooms without knowledge but you can grow many delicious species at home cheaply and easily!

The late Robert Graves constructed a mystical myco-ethnic table, which showed mycophobia as predominantly Celtic and also made the Spaniards more phobic than we - which seemed to be true of the peasants of Asturias when I summered among them - they had excellent wild fungi, both ceps and chanterelles in profusion, which they never touched, eating only tinned mushrooms (plenty of those to be found wild also).

Good to know and be aware of, but there's no point worrying about this stuff. The fact is that when you get to a decent level of health with your nutrition and exercise, you begin to reach a stage where certain activities/foods which decrease your risk of one malady can actually increase the risk of others. That sounds awful, but in reality even reaching that stage means you're already far healthier than most people.
If you get frequent exercise and a balanced diet, things like this will be a tiny concern in comparison.
