Wisconsin shooter Wade Michael Page used a Springfield 9mm semiautomatic handgun to carry out the attack at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., Reuters reported. According to gun experts, the semiautomatic handgun is the same type used in other recent U.S. mass shootings, including one at a theater in Colorado and the attack on a congresswoman in Arizona.

Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) has for months been advocating that the FBI collect data on hate crimes against Sikh Americans. Sunday's tragedy in Wisconsin, in which six people were killed at a Sikh temple, underscores his push.

"This is not the first time that Sikhs have been attacked," Crowley, whose New York City district includes parts of Queens and the Bronx, told The Huffington Post in an interview on Monday. "Unfortunately it's been growing consistently, on an ongoing basis. That's what my concern has been."

President Barack Obama said on Monday that mass killings like the weekend shooting rampage at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin were happening with "too much regularity" and should prompt soul searching by all Americans on ways to reduce gun violence.

"All of us are heart-broken by what happened," Obama told reporters at the White House a day after a gunman opened fire on Sikh worshippers preparing for religious services, killing six before he was shot dead by a police officer.

Asked whether he would push for more gun-control measures in the wake of the shootings, Obama said he wanted to bring together leaders at all levels of American society to examine ways to curb gun violence.

That echoed his pledge last month in a speech in New Orleans to work broadly to "arrive at a consensus" on the contentious issue after a deadly Colorado shooting spree highlighted the issue in an election year. But like his earlier comments, Obama offered no timetable or specifics for such discussions.

The connections between mass media and mass murder are often tenuous -- commentators were reluctant, for example, to indict the "Dark Knight" movie trilogy for the horrific shootings at Aurora, Colo., three weeks ago.

But it's harder to dismiss the revelation that Wade Michael Page, the man shot to death by police after a shooting spree that killed six worshipers in a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin on Sunday, belonged to a hardcore skinhead band called End Apathy.

Why? Because according to TJ Lindley, who was an active skinhead for 15 years before defecting and writing a book about his experiences, bands like End Apathy often have direct connections with the white supremacy movement.

"If you're in a white supremacy band, you are extremely active. You do not get involved in a band and doing stuff like that unless you are completely 100-percent dedicated to the movement," Lindley said.

"People need to be cautious and not jump to conclusions that this was another soldier suffering from PTSD or another mental condition. It’s quite possible his military background played no part in this, because it would appear that if he served from 92-98, he would have not been deployed in Desert Storm, Iraq or Afghanistan - and it’s extremely unlikely for a veteran suffering PTSD or other mental condition would commit such a heinous act."

The spokesman for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office has posted redacted gun permits dated in 2008 for Wade Michael Page, identified by authorities as the suspect in Sunday's Wisconsin Sikh temple shootings. The five permits issued are good for five years.

According to the North Carolina Rifle & Pistol Association, all handgun transfers in North Carolina require that the intended recipient obtain a Pistol Purchase Permit from his/her local Sheriff.

One Pistol Purchase Permit is required per handgun at $5 apiece. When the owner takes possession of the handgun, they must present the permit to the seller, who must keep it in his or her records. It is a Class 1 misdemeanor if the transaction takes place without the permit being presented.

Wade Michael Page, the suspected Sikh temple shooter, was on the radar of the Anti-Defamation League for his involvement with white supremacist groups since 2010, according to Mark Pitcavage, the ADL's director of investigative research.

The ADL obtained photographs of Page playing guitar in front of a large swastika, which it said was taken from the Facebook page for the white supremacist group 'Definite Hate,' in early 2011. That page is no longer active.

Page was a member of Definite Hate, a band affiliated with the 'Hammerskin Nation', a white supremacist group founded in Dallas in the late 1980s, that now controls much of the White Power music scene in the U.S., according to the ADL.

Now, some victims of the Aurora shooting are reaching out via social media to Wisconsin victims and urging others in the community to help during this difficult time that Aurora victims understand all too well.

Cody Hickman, a man who was inside theater eight at the Century 16 movie theater complex on the night of the Aurora shooting, wrote this heartfelt message on Sunday on the Aurora Theater Shooting Facebook page:

Friends, my name is Cody Hickman, and I was in theater 8 during the Aurora theater shooting. I am writing this post as a call to action for all of you. All you will be asked to do is repost this message, and help us network some support...

The Coalition To Stop Gun Violence said in a statement today:

Washington, DC—Our hearts are heavy today as we join the nation in mourning the six innocent Americans who were killed yesterday at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. But “thoughts and prayers” are no longer enough in an America that experiences one mass shooting tragedy after another. For those who are in a position to take action that would save lives, it is immoral to share condolences and then immediately abdicate any responsibility to fight for the reforms that would prevent the next massacre. It’s time for all people of conscience to send a clear and loud message to their elected officials: Restore sanity to the screening system for gun buyers in this cou ntry, or we will vote you out of office.

The gunman in Oak Creek, 40 year-old neo-Nazi Wade Michael Page, had much in common with other recent mass shooters. He used a semiautomatic firearm with high-capacity ammunition magazines. And he was able to purchase his guns and ammo legally despite a personal history replete with red flags. Page was an Army veteran who had been discharged under less than honorable conditions. He had a criminal history. Most importantly, Page had been publicly involved in the White Power movement since 2000. He was known to both federal law enforcement authorities and also anti-hate watch groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center. And this is just what we know after a few hours.

This country deserves a firearm policy that prevents military-style hardware from falling into the hands of dangerous and deranged individuals. Our daily experience with gruesome violence is not inevitable. Let’s be clear: The repeated nature of these events is the direct result of the poor policy choices made by our elected leaders. Americans can solve big problems when they set their minds to it. Today is the day to start making these changes. We ask every American to call their elected representatives today and demand immediate reform. It’s long past time to stand up to the National Rifle Association and say, “Enough.”

India's prime minister said he was shocked Monday by the shooting attack that killed six people at a Sikh house of worship in the United States, and the top Sikh cleric accused the American government of a "security lapse."

"That this senseless act of violence should be targeted at a place of religious worship is particularly painful," he said in a statement.

Giani Gurbachan Singh, the head priest of Akal Takht, the highest Sikh temporal seat, called on Sikhs in the U.S. to adopt security measures at the U.S. temples, including installing closed-circuit cameras.

"This is a security lapse on the part of the U.S. government," he said, according to the Press Trust of India news agency. He called for prayers for the victims to be said at Sikh temples across India and ordered a Sikh delegation sent to the U.S. to investigate the attack.

Speaking with Oak Creek Patch after a round of national television interviews, Mayor Steve Scaffidi said it will take some time for the community to heal.

A memorial event is planned on Tuesday during National Night Out, which will be held as scheduled.

"You're going to feel the effects of this for a long time," he said. "We're going to work toward healing."

Scaffidi said he did not have any previous contacts with the Sikh Temple but knew them as a "great member of the community" that did not have past problems in Oak Creek. The Sikh Temple moved here about five years ago.

Scaffidi said the phone call he received from President Barack Obama Sunday afternoon was "startling." But the two- or three-minute conversation was very comforting, he said, as the president offered whatever federal resources are needed.

From Lower Providence Patch:

According to Philadelphia Sikh Society’s vice president, Harvinder Kauer Kocher, since 9/11, she has noticed reports of acts of violence, intimidation, and in some cases, murder of members of the Sikh community.

“Whoever is wearing a turban in America is 99 percent Sikh,” Kocher said. “Not Muslim.”

Since the attacks, she said, the PSS has attempted to gain more exposure for understanding and welcoming for the Sikh community in the Philadelphia area and throughout the United States.

Locally, such measures have included participation in the annual Philadelphia Interfaith Walk for Peace and Reconciliation, which last took place April 29.

However, Kocher said, more needs to be done by the government and media.

"We are a very small community," Kocher said. "We need the government’s help, and talk on [television] about the suffering."

She suggested that the United States government should have increased gun control laws, and that the media should produce more coverage on the Sikh community for more understanding.

"Why do we have to have a tragedy happen to get good from it?" Kocher said. "And, by good, I mean the media letting people see that we are Sikhs."

The LA Times reports that the slain gunman had tattoos that led officials to categorize the shooting domestic terrorism, according to an unnamed federal official.

However, the official did not say whether the shooter was believed to belong to a hate group.

Federal officials cautioned against thinking that a concrete link to a domestic terrorism group or hate group had been established.

“The investigation will have to continue to see and determine the motive,” said a federal law enforcement official who had been briefed on the early planning for the case. “We don’t know much about the motive at this point.”

This remains an active investigation in its early stages. While the FBI is investigating whether this matter might be an act of domestic terrorism, no motive has been determined at this time.
As authorities searched a home in Cudahy Sunday evening believed to be the residence of the man who shot and killed six people at an Oak Creek Sikh temple, a woman whose son owns that home shed some light on the shooter.

The mother of the suspect’s landlord told Patch Sunday she believed the man had “just broken up with his girlfriend.”

“He’s a renter,” said the woman, whom Patch is not identifying. “He’s new actually. He rented a room with my son.”

The woman said she is “completely freaked out” and that she believes her son found the man as a renter for his home in the 3700 block of E. Holmes Avenue “through an ad.”

“He lived with my son for three weeks, then the house across the street became empty, and he moved there,” she said.

Hindus stand in solidarity with Sikhs in wake of Wisconsin Sikh Temple shooting.

Hindus have condemned the mass shooting at Sikh Temple of Wisconsin (USA) on August five and offered condolences to the victims.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said: Our hearts go out to the victims and their families and the community is deeply saddened at this tragedy.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, urged Hindus worldwide to join him in prayers for the victims and their families at this difficult and challenging time and urged Hindu temples to hold special prayer sessions for the victims and their families. It was a senseless and shocking violence on a group of worshippers.

Mourning this loss, Rajan Zed pointed out that Sikhs had made lot of contributions to America and the world. Various faith and inter-faith groups nationwide should join hands to express support to the Sikh community and to spread the message of peace, love and harmony at grassroots level, Zed stressed.

We stand in solidarity with the Sikh brothers and sisters, Zed added.

From the Hindu American Foundation:

Dharma traditions--the Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Hindus--hold non-violence and peaceful co-existence as paramount values. It is a cruel irony that Sikhs, donning the turban as among proud symbols of a spiritual mandate to serve humanity as defenders of dharma against all onslaughts, find themselves sought out and victimized by ignorant assailants on too many occasions.

We call on all Americans today to join Sikhs in mourning a senseless attack. And to take this opportunity not only to learn about the sublime teachings of Sikh gurus, the Sikh faith, and the meanings of its external symbols, but also to join hands to ensure that the gurudwaras remain sanctuaries of joyous worship and celebrated sharing of langar, or community meals, for generations to come.

Statement from Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF):

"The Sikh American community, like all Americans, is shocked after this attack,” said SALDEF Managing Director Kavneet Singh. “We mourn the loss of those who were killed today and pray for the swift recovery of the those injured, including the veteran police officer who put himself in harm's way to protect his community.”

SALDEF thanks our friends and neighbors from across the country for the outpouring of support and condolences as we come together to mourn and heal as one unified national community standing together against violence and bigotry.

“This attack is particularly troubling due to its occurrence at a place of worship,” said Mr. Singh. “All houses of worship, like this gurdwara, are places of peace. Attacks at any of the nation’s houses of worship must be condemned by all Americans. This type of crime strikes at the very foundation of religious freedom, among the fundamental principles upon which this country was built."

As a Sikh, I believe that people are inherently good. Our faith instills a sense of perpetual optimism, and our traditions teach us to always make the best of a tough situation.

Fear and negativity are foreign to our vocabulary. Sikhs are not a God-fearing people; we are God-loving.

The commitment to love and optimism shapes the way that Sikhs interact with their societies, and I'm concerned that becoming cynical and negative might lead us down a slippery slope.

Brady Campaign President Dan Gross today released the following statement in response to the mass shooting at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their loved ones, and the entire community of Oak Creek after today's terrible shooting at the Oak Creek Sikh Temple in Wisconsin.

This is yet another powerful reminder of the need for a real national conversation about what we can do to prevent gun violence tragedies, and for our elected officials and presidential candidates to participate in that conversation by offering real plans to do something about it.
There have now been 61 mass shootings since the tragedy last year in Tucson and 100 school shootings since the one at Columbine High School. Tomorrow, another 32 Americans will be murdered by guns.

The American people from across the political spectrum are calling for solutions. We know that we are better than this. It is time for our elected officials and presidential candidates to show us that they know it too.

His statement on Sunday's shooting:

I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families and community of those injured and killed in today’s tragic shooting, and I join the people of Wisconsin and the entire Sikh-American community in mourning. There is no room in any society for such violence.

While we do not yet know the motivations of this senseless act and it’s important to wait for more information from law enforcement, we do know that Sikh-Americans are too often the victims of intolerance and hate. Today we all grieve for those lost in this tragic event.

The World Sikh Council - America Region (WSC-AR), an umbrella organization representing Sikhs in the United States, released this statement on Sunday:

The World Sikh Council - America Region (WSC-AR) is shocked and deeply saddened by the senseless shooting which occurred earlier today at the Sikh Gurdwara of Wisconsin in Oak Creek near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It has been reported that a suspect opened fire on a weekly congregation of the Sikhs while a reading of the Sikh scripture was in progress. Current reports say that there are 7 deaths, including an assailant, and many injured. One brave police officer was also one of those injured.

WSC-AR offers its condolences and support to the victims, their families, the law enforcement agencies (especially the police officer shot in the line of duty) and the surrounding community. This is a troubling day, not only for Sikh-Americans, but also for all Americans.

In the coming days, along with Sikh advocacy organizations, we will be working with public officials, and law enforcement authorities, to understand the events of today and to help the community in whatever way we can. The Council will also be providing support mediums for our interreligious partners and the public as we sort out this situation. This shooting comes on the heels of another tragedy, as our country continues to recover from the senseless shootings in Aurora, Colorado.

We urge all to pray for the victims, their families and friends, and the surrounding community. We also express our gratitude towards the law enforcement authorities for their prompt and effective response to the situation as it unfolded. We offer our appreciation for the bravery of the police officer shot, offer condolences, and pray that he will recover fully soon. As we learn more about the situation, we will keep the public updated and informed. We thank you for your patience and prayers during these difficult times.

At 4:30PM EDT, the President convened a call with FBI Director Bob Mueller, Chief of Staff Jack Lew, and Homeland Security Advisor John Brennan to receive an update on the tragic shooting in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Following that briefing, the President called Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi and trustee of the Sikh Temple Charanjeet Singh to express his condolences for the lives lost and his concern for those who were injured.

During the briefing, the President was informed that the situation at the Sikh Temple was under control and that the lone gunmen was killed by an Oak Creek police officer. The President also was updated on the condition of some of the victims of the attack, and he directed that the federal government assist as appropriate in the investigation into the shooting. The President said that he wanted to make sure that as we denounce this senseless act of violence we also underscore how much our country has been enriched by our Sikh Community, who are an integral part of our broader American family.

Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards confirmed that seven people were killed and three people were injured in a shooting at a Sikh temple sunday morning.

He said the initial 9/11 call came in around 10:30 a.m., and police responded, finding one person injured. An officer was attending to the injured person when he was ambushed and shot multiple times by the suspect. A second officer then arrived, was shot at by the suspect, and then returned fire, killing him, said Edwards.

"It's taken most of the day to clear that area, the church itself and the surrounding area, because of the conflicting reports we got about how many people were involved," he said.

The FBI will be handling the criminal investigation and it will be treated as a domestic terrorist incident.

Another press conference will be held Monday morning at 10 a.m. central time.

Edwards said the injured officer still has family that needs to be notified. He offered no information on the suspect.

Everyone has been evacuated from the temple.

Froederdt Hospital Chief Medical Office Lee Biblo says the three victims of the shooting in suburban Oak Creek are all adult men. The hospital did not immediately identify the police officer or the other two victims.

Hospital spokeswoman Carolyn Bellin says one of the victims had gunshot wounds to the face and extremities, and another had wounds to his abdomen. She did not know which was the police officer, or the nature of the third victim's wounds.

Police said earlier the officer is expected to survive.

Bellin says the hospital is not expecting any more shooting victims.

Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn of the shooting that tragically took so many lives in Wisconsin. At this difficult time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and wounded. My Administration will provide whatever support is necessary to the officials who are responding to this tragic shooting and moving forward with an investigation. As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family.

“The NYPD is increasing coverage in and around Sikh temples in New York City today, including the deployment of Critical Response Vehicles, as a precaution in the wake of the Wisconsin shooting. There is no known threat against Sikh temples in New York City, however, the coverage is being put in place out of an abundance of caution.”

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) put out a statement on the temple shooting, calling it "terrible violence" begot by "evil." His statement:

While the situation in Oak Creek continues to develop rapidly, we are working with the FBI and local law enforcement. I became aware of the situation late this morning and continue to receive updated briefings.

Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, as we all struggle to comprehend the evil that begets this terrible violence.

At the same time, we are filled with gratitude for our first responders, who show bravery and selflessness as they put aside their own safety to protect our neighbors and friends.

Tonette and I ask everyone to join us in praying for the victims and their families, praying for the safety of our law enforcement and first responder professionals and praying for strength and healing for this entire community and our state.

The shooting Sunday at a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin on Sunday will only add to the debate over gun control that is still simmering from the violence in Aurora, Colorado three weeks ago.

Depending on what's discovered about the motives of the shooter, it also seems likely to raise questions over the issue of religiously motivated hate crimes. That topic has been simmering itself in the halls of Congress, with lawmakers (predominantly from urban communities) warning about the vulnerability of certain groups of individuals. In fact, in April of this year, 92 members of the House sent a letter urging the Department of Justice to take stronger steps to collect data on hate crimes directed at the Sikh community.

“The more information our law enforcement agencies have on violence against Sikh-Americans, the more they can do to help prevent these crimes and bring those who commit them to justice,” said Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.), who led the effort. “The Department of Justice and FBI have carried out important outreach efforts in coalition with the Sikh community, but these efforts must also be paired with data collection to ensure we are doing everything possible to crack down on hate crimes against the Sikh community.”

Kanwal Singh couldn’t take it anymore.

For about a year, the Canton teenager had tried living in metro Detroit wearing a turban over his uncut hair – as mandated by his Sikh faith.

But the stares and insults were too much.

“Terrorist!” Singh remembers some students in his high school blurting out at him. And so, in 2007, he got his hair cut and shaved his beard – one of many Sikh boys and men who are giving up their articles of faith to avoid discrimination and harassment. Singh and others say a majority of young Sikhs in metro Detroit have cut their hair out of fear.

The niece of the temple president on WTMJ, who did not attend temple today:

"No one was answering their phones. All the mothers, the ladies locked up in the room. Kids are in the basement, dont know where the men are. It's going to affect all of us here. For me, my life flashed in front of my eyes. Every single member of my family was inside that church. Just like this, everyone can be gone. I rushed home."

"The scariest feeling in the world."

Amardeep Kaleka, a member of the temple whose mother and father were inside at the time of the shooting, told WISN that there were multiple shooters and it was a "well-coordinated" attack.

"Post-9/11, a lot of Sikhs were attacked because we wear turbans and we have long beards and Afghanis look like us, and we look like Afghanis," he said. "Post-9/11, multiple were murdered. Murdered in New York, murdered in Phoenix, and there have been plenty of documentary films on that. The threat is always there. We know that threat, but we're a very peaceful community... Today was very, very much out of the blue."

From the AP:

Witnesses outside of a Sikh temple near Milwaukee say people inside with whom they have spoken are describing a hostage situation.

Police in suburban Oak Creek have not released any specific details about the shootings that took place Sunday morning. It was unclear how many people had been injured.
Authorities have responded with a dozen ambulances and tactical units. At least two people have been taken to the main trauma hospital in the area.

Sukhwindar Nagr (suk-WIN'-dahr NAG'-er), of Racine, says he called his brother-in-law's phone and a priest at the temple answered. Nagr says the priest told him that his brother-in-law had been shot, along with three priests.

Nagr says the priest also said women and children were hiding in closets at the temple.
