The Great Gym Conspiracy

I was one of those keen new gym members in January. I started off determined to get into shape, but at the same time I was also terrified.

As we advance into spring we are entering a transitional period, I'm not talking about daffodils and a hint of sunshine. I'm talking about the gym. Yep, the two week wonders from the New Year have left the building. Now the equipment is free for us to carry on as normal. But fair play to those who are still with us three months down the line. We all started off somewhere. Writing that makes me sound like a hardened gym user. I'm not. I was one of those keen new gym members in January. I started off determined to get into shape, but at the same time I was also terrified.

My first foray into the gym was quite traumatic. (See previous posts for further info). The gym, this hallowed building so terrifying on the inside. The room filled with equipment that I hadn't a clue how to use, people who could lift really heavy stuff, the staff, who if I ask for help may think I'm a lost cause and would perhaps suggest that the gym was no place for the likes of me. What am I doing here? Maybe I should just stick to running.

I took the plunge. Heart beating, hands shaking, I did the grown -up thing. I asked for help.

If you are in a similar position and are considering joining a gym, listen to the professionals. James Hart, personal trainer at Heart & Body Fit knows exactly how you are feeling "We're here to help, it's our job. If you are unsure about anything just ask."

It's true. As soon as the words, "I was just wondering if you could... " fell from my lips, I felt a new confidence rising. I was issued with a training plan, the scary equipment was very soon easy to use, I now know the names of other gym users and the staff always greet me with a smile... not because they are laughing at me either.

The gym is no longer conspiring against me and my attempts to get fit. Don't spend your time sitting on the bike wallowing in discontent. As James said... Just ask.
