24 Years Later, Kurds Still Mourn for Halabja

Posted: 15/03/2012 23:00

Halabja is a Kurdish town in Southern Kurdistan, and Northern Iraq. It is nearly 150 miles north-east of Baghdad, and has a rich history. It is home to Adela Khanum, an iconic feminist Kurdish figure, who was honoured with the title of "Princess of the brave" and helped save lives of British soldiers during World War I.

On March 16, 1988, Iraqi planes under the leadership of Ali Hassan al-Majid dropped chemical bombs around the town. More than 10,000 civilians were killed, thousands injured and hundreds continue to suffer from the aftermath of the bombs. The chemical attacks started late in the evening, and lasted for nearly five hours.

Kaveh Golestan was an Iranian journalist who had taken the first pictures, and filmed the atrocity. The pictures continue to haunt Kurdish people, soon after they were broadcasted neighbouring Arab countries and western community turned a blind-eye to the atrocities committed under the Baath regime. In an interview with Financial times Golestan explained the inhumane brutality Kurdish people were subject to in 1988, and the aftermath briefly.

"It was life frozen. Life had stopped, like watching a film and suddenly it hangs on one frame. It was a new kind of death to me. You went into a room, a kitchen and you saw the body of a woman holding a knife where she had been cutting a carrot."

"The aftermath was worse. Victims were still being brought in. Some villagers came to our chopper. They had 15 or 16 beautiful children, begging us to take them to hospital. So all the press sat there and we were each handed a child to carry. As we took off, fluid came out of my little girl's mouth and she died in my arms."

Below is one of the early videos broadcasted in United Kingdom regarding the Halabja massacre. The narrator mistakenly refers to Halabja is Halabash in the video, but it highlights the gruesome nature of the indiscriminate chemical bombing in 1988.

On 5 November, 2006, Saddam Hussein was found guilty for crimes against humanity, and sentenced to death by hanging. He was hanged on the first day of Eid ul-Adha, 30 December, 2006. He was not tried for the Halabja genocide, but on the Dujail case for the killing of 148 Shias in Tigris river city. Saddam Hussein's notorious cousin Ali Hassan al-Majid was convicted of crimes against humanity, and sentenced to death for his involvement in the chemical bombing of Halabja on 17, January, 2010.

For history, the first one who used chemical weapon during Iraq-Iran war was Iran in 1983 and it was bubbles agent. 2nd Iraq as everyone in the world knows had Chemical Weapons in form of Mustard Gas and Zairene. The city of Halabja casualties were found killed by Cyanide gas Which Iran has in possession. The Iranian occupied the city using the help of Jalal Talabani the Iraqi present president and they entered the city using chemical weapons (Cyanide). Iraqi army before starting liberating the city warn that they gonna attack the Iranians before 6 hours and asked all civilians to leave the battle area. Iraq Army fired Mustard gas then entered the city. Some of Iranians troops got killed and retrieved to Iran. So it was not genocide Bla bla bla , Kurdish people were not the targets. Halabja people as many Iraqis in whole of Iraq died because of the war.So this another cheap Article is not accurate, and represent a propaganda of one of the KRG.So ,Its JalaI Talabani fault the president of Iraq, he is the one that should be hanged.

Ok thanks for your useless information. I advice you to do some research before making comments! Lets say Halabja was warned prior to attacks, what do you call the Anfal? What do you call all the iraqis/arabs being killed in Baath regime? Did they all get warned before they got killed.... But you know what, your comment proves you are one of the supporters of the Baath regime and if you were given the power and authority, you would do the samething!!! This is not about Kurds and Arabs, ITS ABOUT HUMANITY!!!!!!!

Oh we have an other PARTY or PUK or PKK member called EVAN here.

Let me uderstand something , your problem is with warning !!?. so if people get warning before they killed means OK for you !!?

Iraq got a warning from Bush before killing 1,500,000 of its people. I think its so humanity for you !!?.

ANFAL operations carried out by JOHOOSH , saddam gave them money and weapons and they did the job and they eleminated mostly kurds in BAISH MARGA who were and are armed forces.Iraqi army never had the capability to control Kurdish area, because of the hard geography of that regin, Johoosh knows better because they are kurds and they didnt like Barzani or Talbany.

I believe that neither in the former regime nor in the new Iraq including the kurdish regin there is Humen rights or respect to Humanity.

Still people running away from that country ARABS, KURDS, YAZIDI, Ashyrian, Turkmen, Seriany, Sabiyy ...ect, looking for better place to live unless they have other nationality.
