The Future of European Muslims

Islam is often seen as a problem in European states, particularly in The United Kingdom. In the past decades a new generation of Muslims who proudly assert both their British and Muslim identity have emerged, giving a new cause for bigots who have misconstrued Islamic teachings, favoring their own narrative of a religion that perpetuates violence over harmony. This has alarmed British-Muslims throughout The United Kingdom, with an increase presence of English Defense league (EDL), holding demonstrations in Muslim populated areas. The future of European Muslims, and how they respond to anti-Muslim bigotry will define the future presence of Muslims in Europe.

Muslims have been targeted by EDL; they have been subject to threats, assault and continuously demonized. Recently, MEP Sajjad Karim and his family were threatened by a mob of EDL protesters, they were targeted because they were British Muslims. Imagine if Sajjad Karim was Black, Jewish or homosexual and a mob of 30 or 40 people protested outside his home because of his lifestyle. The public outcry and response would be overwhelming, but unfortunately because he was Muslim, it barely made it to news sites and newspapers.

The EDL demonstrations are largely composed of white boys, waving flags, chanting anti-Muslim rhetoric and shouting that Muslims are not welcome in The United Kingdom, one of their popular slogans being "Britain does not welcome the religion of hatred". Just a couple of months back they held a protest near Kingston University which alarmed Muslim students on campus, and subsequently the president of the Islamic society sent out urgent emails, texts and announcements that all Muslim students should avoid Kingston Town, avoid confrontation with EDL in case they are assaulted. They did not clash with any students in the area but urinated on the local mosque, left pieces of bacons on the cars parked near the mosque and threw bottles of beer in front of the mosque.

Some might think the measure taken by Kingston University's Islamic society is an exaggeration of the violent streak EDL have shown over and over again, but their recent insolent behavior at Cambridge Town shows that these measures are necessary. A mob attacked Muslims in Sidney Street after EDL demonstrators were prevented from attacking the Cambridge Mosque. Demonstrations are an intrinsic part of democracy, and The United Kingdom is proud that all groups are allowed to demonstrate, regardless of whose sensitivities are offended, but EDL demonstrations often turn violent and instill fear within British Muslims.

Debates and discussions about British Muslims are often orientated around what women consciously choose to wear instead of discussing the pressing danger mob groups attacking Muslims, and their places of worship pose within our society. A culture of diversity and tolerance can bare fruit when people decide to address the critical issues within our society, particularly the rise of Islamophobia and fear-mongering bigots who use anti-Muslim rhetoric for their own personal agenda.

Good article. I had an altercation with three EDL members in a pub a couple of weeks ago who claimed they were against 'homophobia' and 'violence against women'. When I enquired if their problems with homophobia meant they took issue with fundamental Christians they informed me that this was a "Muslim problem". I challenged them to tell me what they stood for, but each time they would say "we are against...." before I'd interrupt, saying, "no, what are you FOR". They couldn't tell me. This demonstrated perfectly that they are not standing for any principles - even misguided ones - they are defined purely by what, or whom, they are against. I thought it was going to turn ugly but luckily the barman who is a friend of mine told them they had to leave. It seems fascists and bigots aren't good for business!

Who or what is causing this anti-Muslim violence? Are present-day British Muslims comparable to US Blacks in the first half of the 20th century?

A good article. I think Muslims must remain true to their faith, but think of accepting secular values of the west. In most cases there are no contradictions, but wherever they are, faith dogma should take a second place. It all boils down to fairer treatment of women, respecting other faiths beliefs and a ban on second marriages. Some of the sharia rules on divorce gives no right to get any share of the husband's money, the formidable faqih does not give her any right except a begging bowl for some money for the infant, if any, for some time. This should be replaced by western laws where women do not lose their financial status. This will definetely improve the image of Muslims in the west. And of course disapproval of terrorism.

I agree that this is an excellent article - but I do not think it "all boils down to fairer treatment of women" - I don't claim to have in-depth knowledge of Sharia law, but I would hazard a guess that the people urinating on religious buildings aren't thinking of equality for women and the intricacies of its divorce rulings.

Those urinating on religious buildings can get death sentence if caught in a Muslim country , because it is blasphemous. Equality of women is trampled in west when young girls are sent back 'home' to get married, without even seeing the future hubby. It is all part of equality of gender that must be adhered to.

O Dear! The world gets uglier everyday.

Indian Muslims faced with similar situations have launched an organization called 'Muslims for Secular Democracy' (http://www.mfsd.org/).

They assert that the opposite of secularism is communalism, and reject the latter by stating outright that Muslims are just as content to live in a secular, democratic country as any other group of people. They are part of the central majority, while communalism on the part of Muslims and non-Muslims are but mirror-images of one another.

Unless prominent Muslims in the UK and elsewhere take a concrete stance, Islam will be represented by bearded, contorted faces denouncing secularism and advocating Sharia; or those who repeatedly assert that such people don't actually exist.

Thank you for this, Ruwayda. This was a real eye-opener of an article for me, especially in light of the recent sentencing of Charlie Gilmour for his actions during the student riots last December. What he did was inexcusable and he is certainly paying for his actions. Although the (public) jury is out on whether or not his punishment was befitting of the crime, what is clear in this case of intimidation, vandalism and persecution is that no punishment at all is not the right answer.

Charlie Gilmour's behaviour is not comparable to that of the EDL. Charlie Gilmour is punished while the EDL is relatively tolerated because the authorities are more concerned to protect property than people.

Until we are all more shocked by Ruwayda's photograph than someone swinging on a flag, then British Muslims face an uphill struggle to be treated fairly.
