Norway! No Gym? But I'll be Off Track!

So everything has been running smoothly over the past 5 weeks in my body sculpting quest.I've been to the gym at regular times, my eating has been tweaked over the weeks as I learn more about the importance of nutrition, and I felt like I was really getting somewhere.

So everything has been running smoothly over the past 5 weeks in my body sculpting quest.

I've been to the gym at regular times, my eating has been tweaked over the weeks as I learn more about the importance of nutrition, and I felt like I was really getting somewhere.

But as with all things in life, there just has to be obstacles in the way.

These things are thrown at us to try us of course!

And I feel like I've just had my first hurdle grrrrrrr!

So as a health and fitness journalist, I get to go away on a number of press trips throughout the year.

As you can imagine, these working trips (yes they are working trips and not holidays ) can be quite challenging.

You're at the hands of the PR guys and having to stick to their timetable of when to wake up, when to have lunch, what you're having for dinner and so on.

I have been away for ten days because I was in Norway and Madeira for work.

I did my best to be as organised as possible packing my supplements and protein shakes with me.

But what I didn't realise was that unlike other press trips aboard, I wasn't stopping for lunch as I normally would because we were doing a number of activities which meant everyone else was having packed sandwiches.

As wheat and gluten is off limits on my diet, I was taking with me a lot of fruit, my shakes and more nuts than I should have been.

But because I wasn't sitting down for a proper meal, I over compensated on the foods that I could eat.

To be honest I felt hard done by.

This is what happens when you decide to take your health in your own hands and you're up against all sorts of challenges.

To top things up, there wasn't a gym in any of the hotels I stayed in and although the activities I was doing were physically demanding - kayaking, hiking, via ferrata - I still felt I wasn't getting the workout that I needed like my trainer Tony has devised for me.

Feeling slightly out of my comfort zone and a bit miffed by the whole drama of being away, on my cheat day I overindulged on wine.

I reasoned with myself that it was because I wasn't on course any more and given that I didn't get a chance to eat normally, it was ok to treat myself that little bit more.

So you can imagine how awful I felt when I emailed James Miller, a friend of mine, who also happens to be in the fitness field, about what had happened.

He immediately put my mind at rest and said a week away or so from training was not going to under the work I had put in.

He also pointed out that I didn't entirely go off the rocks with my eating pattern either as I stayed within the foods that I am allowed to eat.

In addition he said it did my body good to take a bit of time off from the workouts because next time I went to the gym I would probably perform better.

The key was to get straight back on track and resume where I left off.

And he wasn't wrong. I was at the gym as soon as the plane had landed and pretty much ached straight away.

I definitely feel I performed better, my muscles had been well rested and they felt that they had been waiting to get smashed in again.

Clearly, I've gone back to eating six times a day and have cut down on the nuts and fruit again.

It's only been five days since my return and back on track but I already feel much better. Phew!

And I've learned an important lesson. This truly is a journey, one from which I can learn from. I just have to keep focusing on the goal in hand.

I may have had that little hic-cup but I'll know I'll be in a lot more control on future trips.

It's my goal and it's down to me to ensure I pack proper meals just like I am able to do in this country.
