Five Ways to Enhance Your Energy

Energy, liveliness, get-up-and-go, oomph, (or whatever you like to call it) is required for making positive changes to your body, life and world. In the same way that 'like attracts like' in relationships, from a universal perspective, 'life attracts life. Energy attracts energy and what you want is made up of energy.

For you to create new and wonderful things it is vital that you raise your energy up to a level that matches the energy of the body, life and world that you ultimately want.

Do things that bring you energy and stop doing things that take your energy away... is the simple, yet profound philosophy of the ancient Hawaiian Kahuna's. These powerful healers knew very clearly that 'mana' (their word for life force or energy) is one of the most precious resources a human being has at their disposal to impact reality. Without energy you have no life and with low energy you will find it very hard to heal your body or world. In order to meet the universe half way it is vital that you do everything within your power to keep your energy up. Use the following top tips to aid your energy enhancement:

Top Tip #1

Breathe For Life

Life can be sustained for weeks without food, days without water, but only minutes without air. This simple fact goes to illustrate the key role breathing plays in enhancing your energy. Unfortunately, most people don't breathe properly, which prevents the natural release of tension and places the body under unnecessary stress as it tries to operate with less oxygen than it would like.

Try this quick test: Place the palm of your hand on your stomach now and breathe in deeply noticing what happens to your belly when you breathe in. Does it go in when you breathe in or does it expand outwards when you breathe in? For most people the stomach goes in when they breathe in, when in fact, breathing properly requires the exact opposite! For your lungs to expand fully, the diaphragm needs to drop causing the stomach to expand outwards. Practice breathing now as you read this, making sure your stomach moves outwards when you breathe in and then inwards when you exhale.

Top Tip #2

Drink for Life

Drinking plenty of good quality water aids brain function, reduces fatigue, increases the metabolism, helps your body to release toxic waste, and has even been linked with lowering the risk of some cancers.

Aim to drink at least two litres of fresh spring water each day. A wise investment for your home is the installation of a water-purification system. Or if this is not possible, then at the very least, buy a jug filter. If you need to buy bottled water then go for brands that use glass bottles because plastic packaging is more likely to release chemicals into the liquid. Carbonated drinks, including water, contain carbon dioxide, which tends to leach calcium from the reserves in your body, so should be avoided. Drinking enough water is a habit. Starting your day with a cup of hot water and lemon is very cleansing and following it with a freshly made juice is a great routine to adopt for setting your day up for success.

Top Tip #3

Eat for Life

In the best-selling book called 'In Defence of Food' Michael Pollan suggests an ancient answer to modern day problems relating to health, fatigue and weight gain:

'Eat real food. Not too much. Mostly plants.'

I love this simple strategy for enhancing energy through the food you eat. By getting back to basics by making sure your meals consist mainly of energy enriched plants, you can very quickly use food as the life-giving fuel that it is meant to be. Avoid processed, chemical-loaded dead foods that make your body acidic and require vast amounts of energy to digest. And while you are at it, help your body by not giving it too much food at any one time. Doing so will leave energy in your reserves that you can use to take action with a clear mind and a cleansed body. Top Tip #4

Move for Life

Exercise is an essential element for cultivating the right mental and emotional foundation for meeting the universe half way. When you move your body you cause the release of endorphins into your system, which makes you feel happier. Exercise is also a great way to lose weight and look great, which in many societies can put you at a definite advantage when going for your goals. Moving your body can also help you live longer through the prevention of chronic health conditions, including heart disease and cancers.

Human bodies are designed to move. So take the stairs, walk to the shops, buy yourself a bike and get your body moving. As you build lean muscle mass your resting metabolic rate (which determines how slowly or quickly your body burns calories) can also increase. Meaning that your body can end up burning more calories, even when you are resting!

Top Tip #5

Rest for Life

Insomnia is a very common problem in today's world. Busy schedules, constant stimulation, and increasingly stressful demands on our time are all leading to increasingly busy minds that find it hard to switch off at the end of the day. So you are not alone if you too find it hard to get to sleep at night.

Sleep is one of the main times in the day that your body uses to heal. When you are sleeping, your body is resting. When your body rests it takes the opportunity to heal and release the stored stress accumulated during your day. This is one of the reasons why you dream when you sleep because healing activity in your body is reflected in your mind in the form of visual images.

For relief from insomnia it is common for people to revert to reading books, listening to the radio or watching the television to help them get to sleep. These devices are often used to help distract from the thinking mind. Unfortunately, these forms of entertainment can actually be counter-productive to getting a good night's sleep as they can cause your mind to become even more active. And even if you do get to sleep using books, radio or television, you can end up having a less restful sleep experience if the content of the entertainment included material of a stressful nature.

Using meditation to help you sleep allows you to enter sleep at a deeper level - making for a deeper, more restful sleep experience. For more tips on meditation see my '10 Myths of Meditation' article. Instead of thinking yourself to sleep, you can use the time to be here now, let go of the thinking mind and enter sleep at a deeper level. Allowing you to peacefully drift off into a rejuvenating sleep that gives you the rest necessary to wake up the next day with joy in your heart and a spring in your step.
