Sandy Thomas is a Minnesota actor/director/playwright and mom. She’s bringing two shows to this years Edinburgh Fringe. Both of them are being produced for Snapdragon Theatre. She’s starring in “The Property Known As Garland”, which is Billy Van Zandt’s 2007, off Broadway hit play. The play shows Judy Garland backstage circa 1969, before her final concert appearance. She also directed Neal Beckman in ‘21A’, Kevin Kling’s humorous one-man play set on a Minneapolis bus line, that rolls along Lake Street in Minneapolis.

Sandy is an Equity stage actor who also belongs to the newly merged SAG-Aftra Union (yay). She’s been on stage in the Twin Cities (Chanhassen, Old Log, Illusion, Mixed Blood, Playwrights Center, Southern Theatre, etc…), and she’s also worked for Geva Theatre in Rochester, New York. On screen she’s had a small role in the Minnesota filmed ‘Jingle All the Way’, where she got to act with the late great Phil Hartmann. She’s also done many commercials (regional and national), and been a part of many training films, and live industrial productions. As a writer, she was commissioned to write several historical dramas for the Minnesota River Rendezvous, which were performed for thousands of school children. Additionally she wrote a ‘cemetery walk’ to commemorate the Highland Prairie Lutheran Church’s 150th anniversary. Members of the audience were guided through the historic cemetery and were able to meet and learn about prior congregation members buried there. (Weisel Flood victims, children who died of polio and tuberculosis, soldiers and a fairly famous nephew of one
long term pastor. )

I just got back from a reading at the Barnes and Noble in the Edina Galleria. My friend Lorna Landvik was reading from her new book 'Mayor of the Universe' (fun read, good Christmas gift).
Listening to Lorna talk I started to feel guilty about my own writing....

I was so lucky to see 'Translunar Paradise' in Edinburgh.' It's one of those theater pieces that will haunt me. It was by Theatre Ad Infinitum.

I'll try and describe it, but I'll fall short. It was a 3 person piece..... a man and...

Anyway... first, some thank you notes.

There's 2 small notebooks with jottings about shows and sights and sounds that I'll be looking through and posting from for the next couple of days. The highs... the lows... the sticky toffee pudding. But first I'll be driving my mom back to Dead Lake (unfortunate...

I think I have an art injury....Well, not a permanent injury. I have 'art neck' That's what I'll call it. Or maybe 'Picasso neck?'
I went to the Scottish National Gallery, and then the Scottish Modern (just building one, not both of them). That's...

It must be said, this Fringe adventure would never have happened if Glenn and I hadn't attended a 1989 Edinburgh Fringe performance of 'Withering Looks', a brilliant and ridiculously funny play written by that dynamic duo Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding, also known as LipService....

Friday August 24th, 2012

I sure hope the 'blog cops' don't collar me for not posting anything last night. It wasn't premeditated or anything.... just exhaustion. We did manage to see two shows yesterday. In addition to the one I perform in and the one I run sound and lights...

Reviews for 'The Property Known As Garland' are coming in, and they are so great. 5 stars, 4 stars, and they say wonderful things like "crystal clear performance," "tour de force", "ferocious energy and considerable presence." I'm so grateful, so blessed, and so not willing...

Everything I mentioned yesterday was true. The part that might seem slightly deceptive is the fact that there were only 5 people in the audience. But in one regard, that makes it even more special that they yelled 'Bravo'. Here's the thing. This trip is...
