I think there has been a huge swing for couples to cohabit before marriage to test their compatibility. This gives them the ability to see how things go before tying the knot. Break-ups of these couples are not included in these stats so it acts as a filter. The relationships that survive have been rigorously tested beforehand by living together and so are more likely to survive the seven year itch. Those that don't make it through the trial don't make it to the alter and avoid divorce altogether.

I love the fact that the older generations are not afraid to get divorced and are willing to create a whole new future for themselves. So many people have stayed in an unhappy relationships and suffered on as they felt too scared or overwhelmed by the thought of leaving. Now there are so many options and exciting new opportunities for the grey splitters that there has been an increase in divorce rates for the over 50's. With the birth of online dating it has never been easier to meet new people and partners. We are seeing an increase in marriages for the over 60's who have decided not to settle for the pipe and slippers approach.

You only have to watch this series of I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here to see what the over 60's are capable of! They are out there having fun and dating. Good for them!

It's always sad when relationships break down and it will always come with challenges. But it's wonderful to see that people aren't settling for less than they are worth and are seeking out happiness.

You only live once so it's important to make the most of it. If you are thinking about marriage make sure you test it out and make sure it's the right relationship for you. The chances of making it work are much higher if you cohabit. If you're unhappily married then there are other options and you might find that divorce is the most liberating thing you have ever done.

So make sure you are in the driving seat of your life and make decisions that are right for you.
