Is Walking Down the Aisle the New Trend for the Over Sixties?

It appears that the baby boomers have decided to shake up old age and are now opting for married life again rather than a blue rinse or a pair of slippers. According to latest figures from the Office for National Statistics marriage rates have risen for people in their sixties.

It appears that the baby boomers have decided to shake up old age and are now opting for married life again rather than a blue rinse or a pair of slippers. According to latest figures from the Office for National Statistics marriage rates have risen for people in their sixties.

Whilst marriage was up by 5% in 2012, surprisingly it is the older men and women who are especially enthusiastic to say "I do". The number of grooms in their late sixties increased by 25% (2011-12) while brides of the same age went up by 21%. One in 10 had been single, two-thirds divorced, and the rest widowed before tying the knot.

These baby boomers are once again redefining their generation ... and good for them I say!

It's never too late to be happy and as we are all living longer why not find another partner to see us through our later years. This time round both partners have life experience and know what they are looking for. Research has shown that top of the list is a good companion who is thoughtful enough to bring them a cup of tea in bed. Men are looking for a woman in good health and women are more likely to want a man who is financially sound.

Falling in love makes you feel like a kid again so it's no wonder that the older generations are jumping on the band wagon again. The butterflies in your stomach and the excitement when they call can take years off you and put the spring back in your step. With love in air there is a reason to enjoy life again and to create new memories together. It's never too late for a new lease of life.

Divorce has always had such a negative stigma surrounding it which is now so outdated, especially with divorce rates at 42% in the UK. However this latest marriage trend shows a change in society's behaviour that reinforces my belief that divorce can be a liberating experience. It is a chance to redesign your life the way you want it. If you adopt the attitude that divorce can be a learning experience and you decide to stay open minded there will be a whole host of new opportunities for you. The end of a relationship is always a sad time and you will need time to heal, however it's important to know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. If other people are finding love again then you can too.

The baby boomers are an inspiration to us all that future happiness in new relationships is possible. So take a leaf out of their book - ditch the bitterness and embrace the change. With a deeper understanding of what you want and need from a partner it is more likely that you can be successful next time round in finding someone better suited to you.

If you follow their example maybe you will get your fairy tale ending after all - never give up hope.

Thank you baby boomers for trail blazing once again and giving renewed hope to us all...I love your passion for life at any age ... bring it on!
