In the opening episode of Girls, Lena Dunham's character Hannah told her parents that she may be the voice of her generation or at least the voice of a generation. And as the last season of the hit TV show premieres this week, Girls really has become the voice of a generation of twentysomething women trying to navigate their way through the world once their student days are over.
And while I might live in Edinburgh and not the bright lights of New York City, I have still learned quite a lot from the show over the past five seasons.
1. It's okay to stalk your ex (current crush/old crush/cute guy in the office) on Facebook.
We all do it, so don't even try to pretend otherwise.
2. It doesn't need to be the weekend to party.
Although you should remember that going to work with a hangover is never that fun.
3. Cutting your own hair is never a good idea.
Trust me; I used to cut my own hair all the time. It might save you some cash, but you'll also end up with uneven hair.
4. It's okay not to love exercise all the time.
I generally enjoy exercise, but that doesn't mean I won't curse my way through a Monday morning abs class when it hurts every muscle of my body.
5. Unrequited love sucks.
Sometimes things just don't work out like they do in the movies.
6. You don't have to say yes to everything
7. Working full time is tough.
You can love your job, but that doesn't mean you want to go into the office every day.
8. Modern dating can be really hard.
Hannah sums it up perfectly when she says: "When we are together, he's SO there, and he's SO present, and then... he disappears for 2 weeks, and doesn't answer any of my text messages, and I feel as though I invented him."
9. We all still dream about being a rock star.
10. Sometimes you just need to ask for what you want
Even if it doesn't work out the way you hoped for.
