Embracing The 'Au Naturel' Look This Spring

However, this early sun can pose the same risks from sun damage as later on in the summer months, especially as our skin has often been covered up for months during winter. As the summer countdown begins, and we jump at any opportunity to get outside in the sunshine, there are a few tricks to help boost that tan whilst ensuring your skin is protected:

This time of year can be very hit and miss when it comes to the weather, but despite still being fairly early in the year, spring can nevertheless bring about some beautiful bright weather. For many, it's the ideal time to ditch the bottled tan and embrace the 'au naturel' look - slowly our skin begins to benefit from the sun's springtime rays after the end of a long dark winter.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating is a great way to get rid of your winter skin by removing any dead or dull skin cells. Using exfoliating gloves, work thoroughly from your feet to your face to ensure skin is fresh and ready for the sun. Exfoliation can make skin dry, so the next step towards that spring glow is hydration.

Hydration

Once you have exfoliated, apply moisturiser and remember to drink plenty of water. The average person is recommended to drink around two litres of water a day and keeping skin hydrated will ensure it looks younger and healthier.

Take it slow

Even though you might be eager to get some colour on your skin, it may not have had any sun exposure for months - so it is very important to take it slow. To begin with, use products with a higher SPF. Take extra care to look after your face and don't forget to protect your lips, ears, nose and the back of your neck.

Don't be a stranger to the shade

Whilst we might feel like grabbing any opportunity to get some sun, it is worth remembering that the production of melanin continues for a few hours after our skin has been exposed to sunlight. In the early summer months when our melanin level is low, it is important not to push our skin too hard. Make sure you spend time in the shade when the UV rays are at their strongest.

If pale and interesting isn't your thing and you have been using the bottled tan all winter, then spring is the perfect time to make the switch and embrace the natural look. However, after months of little or no exposure to the sun, it is essential to take it slow and steady to build a healthy, gradual tan.
