1950s Sexy and Celebrity Make Up Artist Tips

I did a photoshoot recently - 50s style.

In my early 20s it wasn't a look I particularly enjoyed, and yet over the years I have grown to absolutely love it.

Since turning 30, I have enjoyed wearing lipstick - proper lipstick - more than ever. Eyebrows and lashes, are however, and have always been, as vital to me as they were to ladies of this era. I think it was the big hair that always offended me, I felt the whole look aged me as a woman in my early 20s. I don't think I was wrong in that either, coming from a show such as Footballers' Wives, every single photoshoot would be themed with something supremely glamorous, and sometimes I just wanted to look a little more natural - a little more like a 21-year-old in the 21st century.

However, these days nothing pleases me more, than this particular look. It's extremely feminine and sexy. I must buy a conical bra....

These are Sonia Beckford's, who did my make up on this particular shoot, key points for 50s make up -

It's all about the eyeliner flick. If you're not used to doing your own eyeliner, use a soft pencil like Urban Decay's Glide On pencil. Starting from your inner corner, draw the pencil along your lash line until you reach the outer corner (if you find it easier, instead of trying to draw a continuous line, draw from inner corner to centre, then centre to outer corner). Now, take a cotton bud and whilst staring straight ahead in the mirror, use the cotton bud to gently extend the eyeliner, upwards and outwards into a sharp flick. (Try to do it in one swift motion if possible). Once you have the perfect shape, make it more intense, go over it using MAC liquid liner. Use your Urban Decay pencil to line the inside of your upper eye lid.

Finish the look with a set of false eyelashes and red lipstick (MAC Russian Red) and you're good to go!

Sonia's suggested make up pieces -

MAC Liquid Liner Black (now Sonia didn't say this particular MAC liner, that I have picked from their liquid collection, but I personally think it is the easiest to use for 50′s eyes)

My suggestions -

...And hairspray, whatever you want to use - Elnett seems to be the choice of 90% of people - reasonably priced and as good as any other. It doesn't smell quite as wonderful as my Victoria's Secret 'So Sexy' hairspray, that I bought in bulk - literally - last time I was in the USA - huge recommendation for that from me.
