Peace in Mali Needs More Than More Troops

The French military intervention in Mali since mid-January and much of the official discussion of Mali in the UN and among Western governments seem to have been driven by a quite narrow and short-term view of the issues the country faces. As in anything, if the problem is mis-diagnosed, the solution will probably mis-fire.

I have just finished reading Ban Ki-moon's address to the residents of San Patrignano. On Wednesday the Secretary - General of the United Nations visited the drug rehabilitation community in Italy and in his address he mentions two residents that I am proud to call my friends - Mike and Damir.

We are all too aware of the necessity for there to be more vigour and energy behind goals targeted at giving all children access to a free primary education. We are also aware of how important it is that additional resources, such as the new ambition behind 'Education First', are put towards helping the disadvantaged and most in need, first.

Over a decade ago, 21 September was chosen for this honorable role but it's still one of the best kept secrets of the United Nations. On Friday at UN Headquarters in NY, a boy will ring a bell, a girl will sing Imagine and at noon, guests will experience one minute of silence.

Kofi Annan Must Announce the Failure of His Syrian Plan

Bashar Al Assad must be rubbing his hands with glee. His heavily armed security forces and henchmen are killing the Syrian people right under the noses of the UN observers and the noses and ears of the silent witnesses Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-Moon. The UN and NATO are unwittingly providing cover for the massacres in Syria.

The Situation in Syria Is at Breaking Point

Phil Bloomer | Posted 09.05.2012 | UK
Phil Bloomer

Each day the news of Syria gets worse. As a human rights activist told Oxfam, "the situation is hell. In areas under attack, people do not have enough food." Earlier this week, the Syrian Red Cross finally entered Baba Amr with Baroness Amos, but members of the International Committee of the Red Cross, who have been attempting to visit Baba Amr since Friday, remained barred from the neighbourhood. Like everyone else, I feel horror and frustration at the world's seeming inability to stop the killing and help those in need.

Sean Penn and the Falklands Farce

Mia de Graaf

Sean Penn has just added to the farce that is the Falklands/Malvinas Cat Fight... Chucking about words like "ludicrous" and "colonialist" - plus "the Malvinas Islands of Argentina" - Penn is feeding an insubstantial, surface and puny fire that has kept burning for a remarkably long time, even leading UN secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon to express his "concern" at how thick and fast this tiff is progressing. The whole thing was rather inflamed by the incompetence of leaking Prince William's posting to the press.
