So David Cameron is finally making his long-awaited speech on Europe. But who really cares? Well, some diplomats and EU officials that I have spoken to in Brussels and a few of my friends from other EU nations are interested, but the majority most definitely don't care as much as the Westminster bubble.
In the seventy years since Beveridge published his report, Britain has changed radically. Society is now more open, more informed and more aware, especially of politics. It's probably fair to say that one person's ideas cannot now hold as much weight as his did, especially if they were coming from under the radar of public consciousness.
Research (from Tourism Economics) has shown that if we can get the right partnerships, the right marketing and the right policy actions we can increase inbound visitor numbers from 31 million to 40 million by the end of the decade - an increase of 9 million visitors by 2020 creating £8.7 billion a year in additional foreign exchange earnings and over 200,000 more jobs.
I love Britain because the single best thing to come after a night at the pub with pints filled to the top is a full English.
