This media obsession with Oxford and Cambridge... creates an atmosphere of misplaced arrogance and grandeur within those institutions, it fuels the perception that we are ruled by an elite, impenetrable, Oxbridge club, and worst of all it intimidates poorer students away from applying to what are seen as alien institutions that only lets in posh kids.

The Conservative Party Conference this week, as with the other two party conferences, was notable for a supreme lack of passion or insight. It seems that, faced with a world order in flux and a rapidly unravelling economic model, our political leaders really just don't know what to do. I for one would prefer it if they just told us this.

Time was when everyone knew their place, and being cultured usually involved having a cut- glass accent and a daddy with deep pockets. You were either a toff, in which case you knew about art history and the classics, or common, where your world wasn't so much a stage, but more of a Shakespearean tragedy.
