The moment Clegg got into bed with Cameron and co. was the moment he relinquished all rights to that kind of balanced assessment. It should never have happened; simple as. A token voting system referendum and a few quid added to a tax threshold doesn't make up for the fact he has lost the student vote for his party.
The bill, under this light, can be seen as an effective and convenient way to get rid of claims which shines scrutiny over British intelligence agencies. This will no doubt be a win for the security establishment as it will become harder for accountability and transparency to be reached amongst claims against them
Investors were clearly thinking along traditional lines last week and wanted Romney, but the Obama victory doesn't have to be such a bad result for them. Chances of reaching a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff have increased a little bit with the outcome of these elections. And the outlook for getting to a more comprehensive agreement on getting back on a healthy fiscal track have improved somewhat with a second-term president and less power for the Tea Party.
One thing is for certain, however. In 2012, super PAC politics proved ineffective when faced with a massive Obama turnout/campaign machine that was able to mobilize the base and push huge numbers of supporters to wait in line and vote for the incumbent. It appears that grassroots efforts and microtargeting, as old school as these electoral methods may appear, trumped the new, emerging brand of super PAC politics. Good.
I don't think that Obama is anything to rave about. But in the end, Romney and the conservative far right let him win by refusing to align their social policy with the views of an enlightened modern population. The Conservatives need to be progressive and inclusive to survive the next election in the same way that Obama has done.
Much has been said in recent weeks following the unveiling of Atheism+, a form of social idealism enshrined in the philosophical precept of Atheism with its claws firmly wrapped around political philosophy. It is this uneasy marriage of the philosophy of Atheism with the apparent political philosophy of Atheism that has so far been met with appreciation but also bemusement and perplexity by both fellow Atheists and those engaged in mainstream politics.
