People of the World - Look at Berlin

James Davis | Posted 19.06.2013 | UK Politics

Standing before the Brandenburg Gate this Wednesday, Obama will no doubt again make use of Kennedy's towering rhetoric. But this time the mood is different; the promise of 2008 itself already lost to history.

Obama Is the New Clegg: Both Helped Kill Mainstream Liberalism

The moment Clegg got into bed with Cameron and co. was the moment he relinquished all rights to that kind of balanced assessment. It should never have happened; simple as. A token voting system referendum and a few quid added to a tax threshold doesn't make up for the fact he has lost the student vote for his party.

Time to Worry: Turkey Is Becoming USA

There is one country Turkey has never been likened to, and yet, the more closely I follow the developments in Turkey, the more I see how valid it is to point out: Turkey is becoming like the USA after 10 years of AK Party rule. What makes me to come up with such a ridiculous observation?

The Justice and Security Bill and the Threat to Accountability

The bill, under this light, can be seen as an effective and convenient way to get rid of claims which shines scrutiny over British intelligence agencies. This will no doubt be a win for the security establishment as it will become harder for accountability and transparency to be reached amongst claims against them

The Do-Nothing Congress Did More

The job of any politician be they an MP, a Representative or a Senator, or whatever is to serve the general public. It's not a case of they elect you, and then you get to do what you like until the next election.

Obama vs GOP Congress - Game On

This week both President Obama and the newly elected 113th Congress return to Washington to try once again to do the people's business. We start with a strengthened Obama administration and a rather weakened Republican Party and possibly an even more weakened house speaker John Boehner.

It's Time for Washington to Think Strategically

Investors were clearly thinking along traditional lines last week and wanted Romney, but the Obama victory doesn't have to be such a bad result for them. Chances of reaching a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff have increased a little bit with the outcome of these elections. And the outlook for getting to a more comprehensive agreement on getting back on a healthy fiscal track have improved somewhat with a second-term president and less power for the Tea Party.

Obama Must Make Good on His Election Promises

Red State/Blue State

We may be red states and blue states, but we also may want more in common than we think, and that's important to remember regardless of who we elect as president.

Super PACs - A Waste of Time?

Iain Anderson | Posted 09.01.2013 | UK Politics

One thing is for certain, however. In 2012, super PAC politics proved ineffective when faced with a massive Obama turnout/campaign machine that was able to mobilize the base and push huge numbers of supporters to wait in line and vote for the incumbent. It appears that grassroots efforts and microtargeting, as old school as these electoral methods may appear, trumped the new, emerging brand of super PAC politics. Good.

Lessons for the Conservatives from the US of A

I don't think that Obama is anything to rave about. But in the end, Romney and the conservative far right let him win by refusing to align their social policy with the views of an enlightened modern population. The Conservatives need to be progressive and inclusive to survive the next election in the same way that Obama has done.

Why Barack Must Win

The Cambridge Union Society

Though November 6th may not feel as exciting as 2008, in many ways it is more important. All of the president's achievements are at stake against a Republican Party intent on rolling back the achievements of Obama, LBJ and all the way back to FDR.

What is Atheism+ and do we need it?

Tony Sobrado

Much has been said in recent weeks following the unveiling of Atheism+, a form of social idealism enshrined in the philosophical precept of Atheism with its claws firmly wrapped around political philosophy. It is this uneasy marriage of the philosophy of Atheism with the apparent political philosophy of Atheism that has so far been met with appreciation but also bemusement and perplexity by both fellow Atheists and those engaged in mainstream politics.

The Ideological Election

For most of its 223 years as a nation, the US has been an ideology-free zone. Observers since De Tocqueville have marveled at the American preference for practice over theory, efficiency over principle, and money over nearly everything. Until now.

When The Elections Are Over

The most likely outcome of the 6 November elections is that not much is going to change in a relative sense. We foresee a second term for Obama, a (dark) red House of Representatives, and a Senate where the Democrats will win by a hair (although the latter is far from certain).
