He's gone. The manager who took an underperforming squad, turned it into FA Cup winners in his first full season and then unforgettably lifted the Premier League trophy in his next has gone. And, on balance, I think it's the right decision.

Roberto Mancini's sacking, is one of the most absurd I've seen in a long time. Ok, so he had money, but that doesn't airbrush over the enormity of his achievements. Before Mancini, City had not won a major trophy in 35 years. By the end of his third season, they had won three.

Of course, a League Cup triumph and a top ten finish would represent another extraordinary season for the Liberty Stadium residents, but with no team side looking entirely convincing at the League's jazzy end, should they be aiming a little higher than mid-table security

Even at cash strapped sides outside the elite group of clubs in Italy, Mancini won trophies and delivered success, achieving rewards for both Fiorentina and Lazio above and beyond what was expected at the time. Three Italian league titles on the bounce at Inter Milan followed, proving that he had the managerial capability to win under the pressure of Milanese expectation.
