We are in a high security wing of Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre, just outside Heathrow Airport, to run an advice workshop. Often, we find people with urgent needs for advice and advocacy. But today, almost everyone I see is an asylum-seeker on the Detained Fast Track, which means that there is little that we can do to help.

All the main parties are nervous about the politics of immigration, and figures in YouGov's latest poll for the Sunday Times suggest why. Few of us think that immigrants generally play a positive role in British life. The incessant, and often badly-informed stories, year after year, about crimes committed by black offenders, migrant families who 'jump the housing list' and 'welfare tourists' who come here to hoover up generous benefits - they have taken their toll.

The bottom line is that only 134,000 people - 0.3% of the total population - don't speak English at all. Even in Newham, where well over half the population was born abroad, and the Sun seems to think that people "simply don't want to integrate", fewer than 1 in 10 of the population can't speak English well.

The Ukip policy on the European Convention or ECHR is quite straightforward. We wish to withdraw from this discredited shambles. Why? Because the European Court of Justice has become a danger to British democracy and an affront to human rights in general. The Convention has been used to protect and mother cuddle terrorists, rapists and preachers of hatred.

It makes sense to look at migration from a European perspective. As Britain and Ireland are in the EU, they are affected by what other member states do to protect their borders and whether they allow migrants entry, since those migrants can travel to other parts of the EU.

The UK has a segregation problem. When we open our eyes we can see it. We see it when we visit our schools, we see it when we walk round our neighbourhoods, we see it when we look at our friends. By age, income and race - our country divides every morning and every evening.

We are often accused being little Englanders and against immigration per se. We are not. We would happily welcome the brightest and best from around the world, regardless of country, religion or race, but we would not welcome those whose own countries would benefit from their brightest and best staying at home to help build them out of poverty.
