Anyone who read about the Israeli elections in the UK media in the past week will have been told that Israel was set to choose its most right-wing government ever, and that the star was a young, right-wing nationalist named Naftali Bennett. Oops.

How would you feel if I told you that the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, will soon be the most moderate member of his own government? And that means his next Cabinet will be more right-wing too. Two-state solution? Forget it.

If the IRA were firing rockets into mainland Britain from Ireland on a daily basis, we would retaliate and bomb the Falls Road.

Netanyahu will hope his speech further galvanises the already considerable international efforts to pressure Iran through sanctions and diplomacy to stop enrichment, at least to the 20% level. Netanyahu knows that the international community is keen to prevent Iran getting a bomb, but also to prevent Israel from resorting to military action.

Cathartic it may be, but as long as our analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains in this form of arrested development, childishly blaming Bibi for all ills, it only masks the deeper problems and perpetuates a danger for us all - that we learn no lessons and so heighten the probability of making further mistakes. And that none of us can afford.
