Despite the huge increase in donor numbers, brought about because more families have been asked about donation, the underlying rate of families agreeing to donation in hospital has not changed and consent rates have not risen. If we are to save more lives, something I believe we can and must do, then we need to see a revolution in attitudes towards organ donation.

In my opinion, sure, allow people to opt out of donating their organs at death, but the price of that should be that if they ever need an organ transplant beforehand they go straight to the back of the queue.

The average waiting time for the donation of a heart is 93 days for a child and 184 days for an adult and for a kidney, it is 277 and 1110 days respectively. Imagine what you could do with three years of good health and not spending hours of your day hooked up to a dialysis machine. Imagine how much agony families would be spared by not having to wait three months to see if their child can have a heart transplant.
