Over the years I have worked with, and met, some amazing and inspirational women who have offered me insight into the control and power dynamics, inequalities and prejudices that perpetuate violence against women and girls. Of course, these variants will differ from country to country, culture to culture, but one variant remains constant - MEN.

Warts and All: Porn and Young People

B.J. Epstein

We can use pornographic pictures and films as educational tools in classrooms. And we can also make better, more realistic ones, so that young people (and, of course, older people) have a chance to learn about sex in a way that's more authentic.

Pornography on the School Syllabus?

Pippa Smith | Posted 06.05.2013 | UK Lifestyle
Pippa Smith

New guidance for teachers from the Sex Education Forum is deeply disturbing as teachers are encouraged to tell pupils in sex education lessons that porn is 'not all bad', is 'hugely diverse', and to talk about all aspects of porn. Parents will surely be horrified by this.

The next time your children ask you what sex is or tell you they have seen something rude online take the opportunity. Sit down and start talking to your children about sex. It's an issue that, however embarrassing, is something society cannot afford to be taught by the school of XXX.com

Let's Banish Section 28 Forever

Simon Blake | Posted 01.05.2013 | UK Politics
Simon Blake

Section 28 was homophobic, evil, pernicious and unworkable poor legislation - it was unworkable because it never applied to schools who were and continue to be responsible for sex education. But it had an enormous impact nonetheless. And those who introduced, supported and tried to uphold it should be ashamed.

Good PSHE education helps to develop vital personal and social skills, positive values, an understanding of equality and diversity and the importance of individual rights and responsibilities. PSHE education is not a magic bullet but where it is done well in primary and secondary schools it is proven to make a difference to young lives.

Homophobic Organisations Invited to Speak in Schools

We have to consider the impact that allowing these organisations to speak in schools has on children. While these speakers don't necessarily express homophobia in their presentations, it would be very easy for students to come across the materials of their organisations which argue against same-sex marriage and LGBTQ rights on the internet, radio, TV, etc. SPUC for example regularly appears in mainstream media.

New York's Teenage Pregnancy Campaign Completely Misses The Mark

The American campaign, with its irritating rhetorical questions and accusatory statistics, offers no advice on contraceptive methods or the choices a pregnant person has. It's all warnings and threats and videos of baby's admonishing the viewer for getting pregnant.

Sex Education Needs an Overhaul: The Failings of SRE

Lucy Uprichard | Posted 05.05.2013 | UK Universities & Education
Lucy Uprichard

In 2013, we simply cannot teach sex education like this; it is both an insult and a great disservice to Britain's young people to do so. Comprehensive coverage and frank, open discussions about sex and its role in life should not merely be encouraged, but made as necessary a part of the curriculum as science or maths.

No Sex Education Please, We're Muslim!

Irna Qureshi | Posted 08.01.2013 | UK Universities & Education
Irna Qureshi

When I was introduced to the facts of life in a science lesson, I simply dismissed it as some repugnant English method of procreation which couldn't possibly apply to Pakistanis. I reasoned that Muslims didn't need these procedures because I'd heard babies were divinely ordained.

Teenage Porn Epidemic? Let Them Get Over it Without a Teacher

Helen Croydon | Posted 28.12.2012 | UK Universities & Education

We should leave young people to stumble though their own individual paths of sexual discovery. This particular gateway to adulthood is the most exciting of all. Safe sex education is one thing, spelling out preferences, defining fantasies and dictating appropriate reactions is short of social engineering... There has always been a demand - and therefore a supply - of eroticised images. From explicit Egyptian cave drawings and carvings, to top shelf magazines, people - mostly men - have perpetuated a fascination in the physical sexualised female form.

Teach Kids About Dangers of Porn, But Don't Let the Sex Ed Crowd Do It

If mums and dads knew the half of what is really taught in sex education, they'd be horrified. Which is why I don't trust them to teach the risks of porn to 10-year-olds.

What did you learn about breastfeeding in school? Chances are - not much. Whether you were a pupil in the 1950s or the 1990s, it's unlikely you were told anything at all about nursing a baby, because breastfeeding has never ever been a statutory requirement on the National Curriculum, and it still isn't, even today. Teenagers are taught about alcohol, emotions, contraception, cultural diversity and more as part of their PSHE lessons. But breastfeeding?
