A consent culture, where both partners are encouraged to take an active role in their sex lives would lead not only to a reduction of the 'grey area', where rape can be most easily dismissed, but would also lead to more gratifying sex for both men and women.

Taylor Swift is, in many ways, far from a negative role model for young women, but the near fanatical devotion she inspires in many of her legions of supporters illustrates that the message she is giving out is one that is likely to hit home, and it isn't a healthy one.

A sexual double standard of male and female promiscuity is arguably an inescapable, endemic feature of university life. Female promiscuity at university risks severe condemnation where the derogatory terms such as 'slut' and 'whore' will be used.

It's easy to decry the problems of today's youth with a voice of condescension that harks back to the good old days but conversely it's also easy to forget the problems of the past when using this line of debate.

I grew up with words like 'slut' and 'whore' being thrown around by my peers, used in reference to both genders, but more typically slanted towards girls. Only a handful of boys gained reputations as 'man-sluts', and even then they tended to be held in high esteem.
