Thatcher's attacks on unionised industries devastated vibrant communities. The impact is still being felt, with high levels of unemployment and drug abuse. Her cull of manufacturing, mining, steelworks and shipbuilding led to the current unsustainable situation where our core industry is finance, with volatile banks run by questionable people.
I will caveat everything I say here by owning up to the unfashionable fact that I am a Conservative Party member and work for a Conservative politician. The sad reality is that the Conservative Party is out of date and out of touch with the majority of the British population, as exhibited by the recent debate on gay marriage... The error that the apparatchiks of the party hierarchy are making is that they think mimicking Ukip's manifesto will make the Tories loveable. This is ridiculous.
Racism is an ugly and abhorrent trait. So ugly and abhorrent is it that we bend over backwards and avert our gaze from anything which might lead to being accused of being racist. You see it all the time with journalists doing their upmost not to link terrorism or the subjugation of women to Islam. Any attempt at a serious debate is stifled in the current climate.
