What should have been a time of celebration for gay people in France turned into a nightmare when, a few weeks before France was due to become the latest European country to allow same-sex marriage, a young couple was assaulted in Paris on 7 April for being gay.
Over 4000 people have signed an online petition calling for a public apology from the Daily Mail and for the Editor to sack Richard Littlejohn. I, however am indifferent if he loses his job at the Mail or not; he's a journalist and will find other avenues for his transphobic and homophobic rants
Last month, I started a Change.org petition to get the term "transphobia" added to the both the Oxford English Dictionary and Microsoft Office's dictionary lexicon. The petition gained 500 signatures in just five hours and now stands at over 9,000.
Transgender people might be one of the last oppressed minorities. If Ms Burchill's rant had been directed against black or Asian people, homosexual people, Jews, or Muslims, I am pretty sure it would have been met with the full force of the law.
