Equality is a good in itself but, as the committee's report says, ensuring that women have the opportunity to realise their maximum potential is as much an economic argument as one about equality. That should be enough to convince all sides that change is needed.

In his pre-G8 speech the Prime Minister once again raised "the golden thread" theory which posits a link between open economies and open societies. Eradicating conflict and corruption, establishing the rule of law, free speech and the presence of property rights and strong institutions are central to this.

Today, the main workplace debate is often about 'work-life' and family, and these have no gender bias.

For one, fleeting week, the sun came out and it was the height of the British summer. In a flurry of sun, cider and sunglasses, the public stripped-off and it was all naked knees and strappy sandals.
