A very influential person in the FE world told me recently that he'd go mad if he heard us described as a 'Cinderella sector' again, and I don't want to incur his wrath. But, that said, FE needs to continue developing its own vision and voice if it is going to carry the media and policy influence it deserves and needs - and students are a hugely important part of that.
It's important to point out that this is a huge generalisation and, of course, there were/are exceptions to the rule. However, I think, overall, the gap is not an educational one - or level of smartness even - but rather one of attitude. As long as that factor remains, the UK hasn't got a hope in hell of climbing the table, never mind becoming number one.
It was heartening to see so many messages of support for Tom and sadly not surprising to read the various comments of hate that the faceless Twitter cowards immediately started shooting into the ether.I am thrilled for Tom that he has found love, long may it continue; he should be proud of who he is as an individual and for his achievements. The focus for IVD 2013 is to highlight the contribution of youth volunteers working towards global peace and sustainable development. Sharing resources among educators is nothing new in the world of teachers. Veteran teachers may give materials they found useful to the new teachers who are taking over their classes. Teaching methods are always shared and discussed among colleagues; and a large part of that process is happening online in modern times.
Education is a process of providing structured information. It is accessible to every child for free in the developed world, so much so that it's almost taken for granted. The developing worlds are still striving to gain easily attainable education systems like ours, because education is seen as a platform whereby children can greaten themselves.
I recently embarked on a good spring-clean of my files and book shelves at home. My main task was to thin out the serried ranks of policy and evaluation reports that accumulated during a period of freelance employment in the early to late 2000s - the high watermark of the last Labour government's investment in the arts and creative education.
In my case, it was precisely this difference of Hinduism that appealed to me.
