Aside from these debates around initialism and labels, I was also party to a number of high powered debates around the use of word 'phobia' in homophobia, transphobia etc. Again there are many valid points to be made around what phobias are and what they are not and we could debate that for a very long time without actually changing anything.
A quick search on Twitter pulls up an unending list of people using the term as a slur outside of its original context as a homophobic insult. The term has been adopted as a synonym to idiot and other generic insults. Whilst this has desensitised the word's meaning, the undertones of homophobic hate still linger unpleasantly.
When dads hit the dance floor trying to be hip and trendy, everyone else cringes with embarrassment. It's the same with David Cameron's modernising push for gay marriage. A new poll of LGBT people reveals that almost two thirds flinch at his motives. He's trying to look hip and trendy, but he just looks fake and phoney.
I feel there's a change, a positive movement towards acceptance, inclusion and honesty. I used to think I was the only one. The only gay in the village. Yeah, I knew KD Lang was my homegirl and Ellen was too but they were celebrities. I was hardly going to see them around my local Spar. They seemed so far away.
