Fatal Honors

The massacres in Syria are joined by a new and dangerous battlefield in the Lebanon. The reluctance of the West to act against the Assad regime and at the very least to close the airspace for Syrian fighter jets, makes the situation difficult for decent opposition powers. Continue reading...

How to Harness the Wisdom of the Crowds to Create a More Sustainable Business

It is in the area of corporate sustainability that we believe crowdsourcing has the greatest latent potential. This is because the nature, scale and complexity of the challenges demand businesses not only to think outside of the box but to reimagine the box itself. Continue reading...

Veterans Deserve Better

We need to do far more in identifying problems earlier such as ensuring mandatory mental health assessments as part of the discharge process and funding specialist support workers for veterans. Why We're Fighting to Find Britain's 'Lost Generation'

Government Cuts to the Women's Sector are Tantamount to State Discrimination

Our system is broken; the power, the political capital, and the money resides at the top of a hierarchy. Meanwhile those in most need are further disempowered and pushed to the fringes of our society. Without funding the women's sector simply cannot provide lifesaving services to women in desperate need. Continue reading...

Nick Grimshaw and Other Impeccably Timed Coming Out Stories

I'm just saying Nick Grimshaw's story seems a little contrived. And given the sheer size of the wave of popularity he's riding (he has the endorsement of Harry Styles and just about every other imaginable celebrity after all) he's not being called up on it. And that makes me angry. Continue reading...

You Might Be Able to Play the Viola, the Tuba and the Concertina, but I Can Play the iPad

Imagine teaching Jackson Pollock how to correctly apply a paintbrush, or reprimanding Keats and Nabokov for their abominable spelling. Likewise, it probably wouldn't have harmed Lou Reed to have learnt how to properly pluck a guitar. Remember, art is not always about godlike displays of virtuosity. Continue reading...

Wearing a Poppy

The use of the poppy was inspired by the World War I poem 'In Flanders Fields'. It refers to the many poppies that were the first flowers to grow in the churned-up earth of soldiers' graves in Flanders, a region of Europe that overlies parts of Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. The Republicans Are in Slow-motion Demographic Crisis

Republican and Tea Party pundits have talked about the potential for these burgeoning groups to change their voting preferences over time. But the GOP clearly risks long-term demographic suicide if its leaders continue their love-hate relationship with the centre without finding more imaginative ways to meet these voters halfway. Continue reading...

Lessons for the Conservatives from the US of A

I don't think that Obama is anything to rave about. But in the end, Romney and the conservative far right let him win by refusing to align their social policy with the views of an enlightened modern population. The Conservatives need to be progressive and inclusive to survive the next election in the same way that Obama has done. Continue reading...

Obama's Second Term: Realist or Radical?

When he won his first election four years ago, he promised to restore America's reputation in the world. But as he starts his second and final term following a strong election victory last night, president Barack Obama resumes service in the White House with a reputation abroad as a hard-nosed leader who killed Osama Bin Laden and who sent drones to pursue extremists in far-flung places. Continue reading...

How Obama Won

Barack Obama secured re-election by maintaining the coalition that gave him victory four years ago: black and Hispanic voters, young Americans, women and Americans with post-graduate degrees. These outnumbered Mitt Romney’s supporters among white men, older Americans and people who have not been to college. This emerges clearly from analysis of YouGov’s major survey of 36,000 Americans during the final week of the campaign. This showed Obama leading Romney by 51-49% among Americans who supported one or other of the two men. It will take some days, and possibly weeks, for the count to be completed; however, it looks as if the final tally will produce figures within 0.5% of these. Continue reading...

Obama's Win is More a Republican Defeat in a Divided Nation

"One of the Dumbest, Most Futile Elections in History"

Mitt Romney was never going to be a candidate for Mount Rushmore, but barely 40 years after he warned of it, America has become, in Richard Nixon's eerie phrase, "a pitiful, helpless, giant." It is almost irrelevant to the world, except as an engine of fiscal incontinence. Continue reading...
