Breached Piñatas

I have had a front row seat to many of our State Department's diplomatic efforts and can offer unequivocally as one American voice, enormous pride and gratitude for this administration's extraordinary Department of State. Most recently, I draw your attention to the case of Jacob Ostreicher. Continue reading...

A Weird History of Xmas, Part III - Bizarre British Traditions!

In the 17th Century, the Christmas Mince Pies (yes, more meat...) were famous for having a little baby Jesus on the crust, which sounds rather nice, but was a horrifying act of blasphemous cannibalism in the eyes of Oliver Cromwell. It should be said, Olly was not a miserabilist most of the time, but he did feel Christmas was meant to be a period of holy reverence. Accordingly, he did away with it all, and even ordered the confiscation of Christmas dinners from people's tables. Strangely, attending church was also prohibited on Jesus' birthday, which seems a bit weird, even by his standards. Continue reading...

Continental Drift - Political Risks Ahead

Many of the risks in the year ahead could be the result of what might be characterised as drift. A lack of leadership and political will that leaves nations and regions without a clear strategy to solve serious long-term challenges. And in the sense of drifting apart through a divergence of interests over time. Continue reading...

Why I Hope the Universe Really Is a Giant Computer Simulation

For one thing, discovering the universe was a computer would also mean the end of death, since there would also be no life of which it would be worth speaking. This is a significant improvement on life as we find it today. Continue reading...

Don't Mock the Awful Christmas Present Giver

No matter how awful the gift you get from your appalling present-giver, be grateful, smile, and be thankful for the time they clearly spent rooting around trying to find it. Because trust me, when those gifts stop coming, it leaves a large, present-shaped hole on Christmas Day. Continue reading...

What if, Man? - The Power of Fashion

Right now it's so powerful that people are happy to shop in high street stores without any real clue as to where the clothing comes from, what it's made of and who made it - other than it probably came from somewhere in the third world, and that it's going in the bin in a month's time. Continue reading...

Have You Got Everything Now For Christmas?

35 years later and another jet-pack-free Christmas is upon me, but this isn't the only way in which the future has failed to live up to expectations. These days we might be able to get everything now, but how much of it is worth having? Continue reading...

Protecting and Promoting the UK in a Digital World

Improving Care for Older Cancer Patients

The moral imperative to root out ageism in the NHS now has legal backing, following the recent expansion of the age-related provisions of the 2010 Equality Act to include services. All public sector organisations must eliminate unequal treatment on the grounds of age. But where do we start in cancer care? Continue reading...

In Emergencies, We Shouldn't Only Be Saving the Children

This focus on the very young is perhaps a natural reflex, yet we mustn't allow it to blind us to the needs of older people. As a doctor myself, and currently president of an international medical humanitarian organisation operating in emergencies around the world, I want to challenge our sense that we should always focus first on the needs of the very young in emergencies. Continue reading...

Never Mind the Mayans, Here's the Apocalypse

If I could have one Christmas wish, it would be for our politicians to stop being too embarrassed to stand by culture and support it for fear of being branded 'elitist'. The Arts are for everyone, and nothing embodies this better than the volunteers who worked tirelessly to create the opening ceremony this summer. Continue reading...

Young, Gay and Homeless

Being homeless is one of the worst things can happen to someone. I know because I have been there. In 2004, at the age of 20, my circumstances changed dramatically, and I was made homeless one week before Christmas. I was devastated, and it was a dark period in my life. Continue reading...

Comfy Onesie? Good, Now Lets Talk About Cotton...

How tough is it picking cotton? Without being in a field surrounded by the crop, we can't tell you for sure but what we can replicate is the amount of work it entails, the monotony of that work and how much you'll get paid for your time - that is if you're a child working in Uzbekistan.
