Girl Rising: A Better Life Begins in School

If one thing was made clear by the scale of the recent anti-child slavery demonstration of 200,000 young people in the Burmese capital Rangoon, it is that regimes can repress for a time but they cannot maintain their repression indefinitely. The marches show that while children may disappear one by one into slavery, sold off by relatives or neighbours, becoming in effect invisible people - the victims' cries for help cannot be silenced forever, and eventually the truth will out. Garden Design Trends for 2013

This year - we predict some more radical changes in the world of gardening, reflective of the social and economic and planetary trends we're seeing at a macro level. Some gardening predictions are controversial, some based on what we know is selling, and others simply have a sprinkling of gut feel. Continue reading...

Critic on Stage: Why I'm Taking a Modern Dance Class

For the past two years I've been an arts journalist, writing about everything from classical ballet to wildly abstract modern dance. But I've never had any actual hands-on dancing experience myself, and thought it was about time I got some. Continue reading...

Get to Edinburgh, Before Everyone Else Does

Congrats to Auld Reekie, UK's favourite city 13 years in a row and recently voted one of the top five 'must see' cities in the world. No doubt Scotland's capital will be more unbearable than ever this summer - or the Season of the Mime Artiste as we like to think of it. Continue reading...

Ten 'Bad' Habits That Are Good for You

Ever promised yourself that this year you were definitely going to give that bad habit the flick, only to give into your vice again after only a couple of hours? Well, the good news is that 'bad' habit may not actually be as harmful as you think. Continue reading...

How I Came to F***ing Love Science

Now that we've vanquished all doubt and accepted that science is f*cking cool, let's take a moment to really appreciate the fact that for every celebrity-obsessed-teen on the TV, there is at least one science geek somewhere in the world sharing his wisdom, online, with those who crave it. Continue reading...

Sudan: Darfur Is Still Suffering 10 Years After Conflict Began

This year marks 10 years since the start of conflict in Darfur and the numbers speak for themselves. During 3,655 days of violence, hundreds of thousands have died, millions have been forced from their home and 2.7 million still rely on food aid for survival. As we approach the grim anniversary of when violence began, I visited the war-ravaged region this week to see for myself the impact British aid is having on the ground. In many ways, the fact that I am only able to blog about it after returning from Darfur because of the security threat, speaks louder than any of the words I can write. Continue reading...

Weekend Shopping: Kicks and Kiddy Shoes

I love shoes. Shoes don't care how much Quality Street you ate over Christmas, the straps won't strain after a big dinner and they are so much easier than clothes to shop for as the sizes tend to be pretty standard across brands, with far less variation than you find in clothing. Continue reading...

All Fans Are Affected by the Welcome Ticket Price Debate - Not Just Those in the Premier League

Many have an allegiance due to family or school connections (like I do), where stopping going simply isn't a viable option. This makes the current situation even sadder though, as fans are being held to ransom by clubs (and ultimately a system) caught up in a downward spiral of debt and short-term goals. Continue reading...

BBC Persian Gets Iranians and Israelis Talking

It's not often that ordinary Iranians and Israelis get the chance to talk to each other, but that's exactly what happened this week live on air on the BBC's Persian television service. What came across clearly was that despite the deep tensions between their two governments, Iranians and Israelis actually have a surprising amount in common. Continue reading...

My Hopes for England in This Six Nations

Quite simple really. In essence, I want to see that England kick on from the New Zealand game. I want to see that they have not wallowed in the result for too long and I want to see that they have the steel and desire to move on and improve from it. Not too much to ask is it? Continue reading...

Final Meals on Death Row Reveal New Thinking on Obesity

Perhaps a unique way of getting at the answer to this question - what our true consumption desires are - is to examine what people choose to eat for their last meal. What would you choose to eat if all concerns over your body image, cholesterol and mortality were removed completely? Continue reading...

How Private Capital Can Help Sustain Our Commitments to the Developing World

As a former treasury minister, I understand how markets can be used to benefit people around the world. We recognised that public funding, and specifically aid, alone could not solve all of the challenges faced by developing world countries. There was a clear need to harness private sector capital and expertise. Continue reading...

A Striker Against Malaria

Even after you are no longer at risk of death, for months you are still physically weakened and thoroughly exhausted. I can personally attest to this. The Gay Marriage Bill: Your Guide to What's Proposed

After months of speculation and, at times, fairly heated debate, the detailed proposals for same-sex marriage in England & Wales have now arrived. The "Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill" was published by the Government on 25 January 2013, in a document running to some 50 pages. What does it say? Continue reading...

Delivering your message in an age of short attention spans

Since the first commercially operating printing press ran paper through its wheels in the late fifteenth century, the art of communicating a message has been under continuous refinement. The days of lengthy type-written letters were replaced by the telegram, opening the door to shorter forms of writing and faster responses.... Continue reading...

How Math Could Improve Life for Nearly 6 Million With Parkinson's

Triple Dip? Maybe - Triple Crisis? Definitely

If GDP also shrinks in the first quarter of 2013, then the economy will be back in technical recession - the third recession in the space of five years. However, this still remains speculation. Ad Review: Lucozade - Last Men Standing

The advert is imbued with the spirit of competition. It presents Lucozade as the superior product and water as the inferior product. I must admit that the advert does make some pretty bold claims. For instance, it states that Lucozade is 'Better than Water.' Continue reading...

Girl Rising: Adult Complacency Is Over

The protests about violence against women remind us that too many men in 2013 still treat women as their chattels, to be exploited and brutalized. But they also illustrate that those who violate rights are being challenged head-on by women. Continue reading...
