Wine of the Week: Riposte, 'The Dagger' Pinot Noir 2014

Riposte, 'The Dagger' Pinot Noir 2014, Australia

A fine, upfront Pinot Noir from the cool Adelaide Hills in South Australia, Riposte is the new label of Tim Knappstein, ex- of his eponymous label Tim Knappstein of the Clare Valley, but now forging his own way in this relatively cool part of sothern Oz. Tim uses a signigicant proportion of whole berries in his fermentation for this wine giving the fruit brightness of carbonic maceration (the technique that's common in Beaujolais), with very little oak influence. It has fabulous aromatics, cherry and kirsch, and buoyant, fresh black berries, briar and spicy truffles. Joyous fruit ripeness and sweetness on the palate, it is super sweet and creamy, but framed by its acidity and a fine, gentle tannin to support.

£15.99, St Andrews Wine Co., see all stockists on wine-searcher.com.
