Follow The Art Trail At Half Term

If you're in London, or thinking of travelling to the capital during the half term holidays, here's an activity that manages to be both educational, inspirational, creative and free. Plus it'll keep you fit, because it involves walking.

Lots of walking.

So even if you spend the rest of half term watching telly and eating sweets, your parenting conscience will be clear because you'll have taken part in one of the most wholesome activities ever.

The event I'm referring to is the Art Treasure Trail, orgainised by publisher DK, in association with Junior magazine and four of London's leading art galleries.

It starts on Wednesday, 28th October, when your junior art critics will be

challenged to explore London's art galleries, discovering exciting artworks and picking up clues along the way to complete a puzzle. Their reward is a cool hands-on Art Masterclass Party where they will make a giant collage for display in The Dali Universe on London's Southbank. Other galleries participating are the Hayward Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and The National Gallery.

The trail is taking place to celebrate the publication of DK's new Children's Book of Art - a book that traces its own trail through centuries of art from the first daubs of paint in prehistoric caves to modern movements including Impressionism and Surrealism.

The event is completely free, with goody bags for all participants. You will need to pre-register, so how can you get involved?

You can find full registration details and download the Art Treasure Trail map from this link.

The event kicks off in the morning of the 28th October at The National Gallery. Goody bags will be given out by the Getty entrance information desk to each child taking part. You'll then set off on a journey which aims to brings art to life. You'll walk from one gallery to another, culminating at the Dali Universe where there will be a host of fun art activities including face painters, self-portraits, a giant collage and a short history of art by actors. Plus, anyone with a completed route map will be in with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes.

Participants need to pre-register for the Art Masterclass Party at Dali Universe, as places are limited. The party takes place between 1.30pm - 4.30pm and each session takes 40 minutes. You can book your time slot at this link. Participants must be aged 6 and over.
