Flash Floods Hit Scottish Capital

PRESS ASSOCIATION -- Homes and businesses have been hit by flash floods after heavy rain in the Scottish capital.

Cars were seen floating down the road in Balcarres Street in Edinburgh as water levels rose.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue said that it has been overrun with calls reporting flooding from around 3pm onwards on Friday afternoon.

It has brought in high-volume pumping appliances from the Borders to help clear the excess water.

Sepa issued a flood alert warning for Edinburgh and Lothians, warning of road flooding.

Balcarres Street, Whitehouse Loan, Longstone Road, Egypt Mews and Morningside Road in Edinburgh were worst hit.

Andrew Brogan, director of Alba Motor Company in Balcarres Street, said: "There was lots of water and it has been quite severe.

There was a car floating down the street.

"There were cars moving and earth coming down from the grass, and a few houses on the ground floor will have been flooded.

Our garage was half flooded but we managed to get it all cleared out. It was tropical."

The fire service said that three domestic and two commercial properties were flooded in Balcarres Street.

An Edinburgh City Council spokeswoman said: "Following heavy rain this afternoon certain areas of the city have experienced flash flooding. The worst affected areas are in the south and west of the city. There has been a significant volume of calls from residents and businesses and we have deployed emergency staff to provide assistance."
