Vince Cable Attacks US Debt Ceiling Negotiators As 'Right Wing Nutters' And Other Controversial Moments

Vince Cable Calls Republicans Right Wing Nutters... And Other Controversies

Vince Cable this morning labelled those attempting to block the rise in America's debt ceiling as "rightwing nutters".

He told the BBC "a few right-wing nutters in the American Congress" were damaging the global economy.

The US is currently involved in crunch negotiations to raise the amount of money its government is able to borrow before August 2 - when their Treasury could run out of money.

It's not the first time the Business Secretary has provoked controversy with some of his outbursts.

Most notably he was stripped of responsibility for overseeing News Corp's bid to overtake BSkyB after being recorded telling undercover reporters he had "declared war" on Rupert Murdoch.

But Cable's wrath is not just directed at Murdoch. He once described his own government's policy as Maoist and chaotic at a dinner in Birmingham. Cable has also attacked capitalism saying it "takes no prisoners", in a move that was described as "odd" by business leaders, making him the UK's first business secretary who has had to publicly declare he was not a Marxist.

Cable, however, is nothing if not self aware. Writing about gaffes in the Daily Mail, he admits: "Journalists are friendly but they and I know any slip-up will make the following day’s headlines."
