Salon Gunman 'Needed Medical Help'

PRESS ASSOCIATION -- A man who walked into a hair salon and shot his ex-wife "desperately needed medical attention", his family said.

Darren Williams, of Cwmbran, South Wales, went on the run following the shooting and was found dead in woodland five hours later by police.

The 45-year-old used a double barrelled shotgun in the attack on his estranged wife in the salon where she worked in Newport on Friday afternoon.

In a statement read to BBC Wales, his family said: "Darren has suffered for the last few weeks due to the traumatic break-up of his marriage and desperately needed professional medical attention."

Mr Williams' ex-wife suffered an injury to her knee and her condition has been described by police as stable but she remains at the Royal Gwent Hospital.

Two other women were also injured in the attack but have since been released from hospital.

Relatives of Mr Williams said they were devastated by Friday's events.

Following the attack at Carol-Ann's salon, a search was launched by Gwent police using armed response officers and helicopter teams.

Later that evening Mr Williams was found dead in Brynglas woods - just a mile from the salon on Malpas Road.

Police said they were not treating his death as suspicious or looking for anyone in connection with it.
