Topman T-Shirts Accused Of Being Sexist And Glamourising Domestic Violence

Topman T-Shirts 'Comparing Women To Animals' Spark Outrage

Topman has been accused of comparing women to animals and of glamourising domestic violence on a number of its T-shirts.

The popular men's clothing store, owned by billionaire Sir Philip Green, has said it will remove two items of clothing from its shops after they prompted an outcry on social networking sites.

One of the offending T-shirts featured the slogan: "Nice New Girlfriend: What Breed Is She".

In a message directed at the store on Twitter, one user said: "@topmanuk is this meant to be amusing? Woman are not cattle. Idiots."

Another shirt led some people to believe it was making a joke about domestic violence.

The red shirt carried the slogan: “I’m so sorry but" followed by a list of excuses with tick boxes: "You provoked me; I was drunk (box ticked); I was having a bad day; I hate you; I didn’t mean it; I couldn’t help it."

The shirt was listed as out of stock on the Topman website on Wednesday afternoon.

The slogan prompted one tweeter to tell the store on Twitter: "Let's glamourise domestic violence, shall we? @topmanuk you should be ashamed of yourselves!"

Topman has decided to remove the shirts from their store.

In a statement issued on Wednesday the company said: "We have received some negative feedback regarding two of our printed T-shirts.

"Whilst we would like to stress that these T-shirts were meant to be light hearted and carried no serious meaning we have made the decision to remove these from store and on-line as soon as possible. We would like to apologise to those who may have been offended by these designs.
