A British man has been extradited from Australia to appear in court in London charged with child sex offences dating back to the 1940s.

Welshman Reginald Davis, 77, had been living in Vanneroo near Perth, but was ordered back to the UK to face 16 charges of sexual assault including child rapes.

Some of his crimes date back to 1949, the most recent being in 1973.

Davis entered no plea when he appeared in court yesterday shortly after landing. District Judge Elizabeth Roscoe sent the case to Southwark Crown Court and Davis will remain in custody until December 9.

Outside the court, lawyers said the charges made it "one of the most historic sex offence cases of its kind".
