The 5p Beta-Blocker Pill That Helps Prevent Cancer Tumour Growth

A tablet costing a mere five pence a day could be the key to stopping deadly cancer tumours developing, recent research published in the Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention has found.

Scientists from Ohio State University and Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark looked at the records of 4,000 people battling severe forms of cancer.

Amongst these records, 372 people had been prescribed beta-blocker pills, usually handed out to help tackle high blood pressure and heart problems.

The researchers found that those who had been taking the low priced beta-blocker for at least three months, were 13% less likely to die within the next five years. They also found that they were particularly effective on those with skin cancer.

Experts believe that the beta-blockers, which reduces the heartbeat and consequently lowers blood pressure levels, help prevent cancer tumours growing by stopping the growth of the blood vessels supplying the deadly tumours.

The research is being extended by scientists at Nottingham University, funded by Cancer Research UK, who are looking into the link between beta-blockers and breast cancer and whether they can help halt the spread of the disease.
