Newsnight Presenter Emily Maitlis Likes David Starkey's Compliment

It seems BBC Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis has decided to rise above Dr David Starkey’s attempts to goad her into a reaction after “that” interview.

Starkey hit the headlines and sent Twitter into near meltdown after saying “the whites have become black” following the London riots.

Last week, after Ofcom said it wouldn’t be taking action, he criticised Maitlis for her role as chair of the discussion.

“I thought that Maitlis was a disgraceful chairman. Are chairman supposed to attack one of the panellists? Newsnight did not cover itself with glory,” he said.

“Nothing that I said on air could conceivably be construed as racist, but there is this hysteria about race. We have this situation in which we can’t talk about it rationally or sensibly.

At the time of the interview in August Ed Miliband said it was “absolutely outrageous that someone in the 21st century could be making that sort of comment”.

But according to the Daily Mail Maitis would be drawn into further debate.

“I have read Dr Starkey’s remarks and I take them as a compliment. It was a round table discussion – and I did allow him to speak his mind,” she is reported as saying.
