Demi Moore, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Hudson, Jonah Hill - Why Do We Watch Their Weight? (SLIDESHOW)

Why Do We Put Our Idols On Weight Watch? (PICTURES)

It's a very 21st century example of symmetry - fans around the world get fed a bunch of glossy films, well-lit interviews, airbrushed magazine covers, and galvanise themselves into action to emulate the perfect beings they see at the centre.

Meanwhile, the stars themselves, the focus of so much attention, are the first in line at the gym to pummel the pounds away, at the coffee counter ordering a very skinny latte, or sometimes resorting to more extreme measures to maintain the perfect form that secured such star status in the first place.

For some, like the recently slimmed-down Kirstie Alley, Jonah Hill and Jennifer Hudson, it can be a very beneficial regime, with pictures to inspire fans to start looking after themselves equally well.

But for others, the pressure to maintain constant premiere paparazzi perfection can mean taking such discipline to extremes. Throw in individual circumstances, at which the starstruck onlooker can only guess, and suddenly these same A-listers who awe us with their glamour, become the focus of attention for very different reasons.

If the red carpet has become the petri dish where we get to put the magnifying lens on these 21st century deities, why do they put themselves on it when, as appears to be the case at the moment with Demi Moore, they're obviously not at their best?

And why do we need to hold up such otherworldly glorious beings for admiration, envy and emulation, but just as often "concern", mockery, and criticism?

Whatever the motivation, it seems clear that, as long as popular culture needs stars at its centre, those stars remain as influenced by our attention, as we are fascinated by their goings-on.

Here are just some of the stars who will never need to go to WeightWatchers while their fans keep their beady eye on them...
