Mars Sand Dunes On The Move - WATCH

WATCH - Mars Sand Dunes On The Move

The sands of Mars are on the move and we have the gifs to prove it. Yes, we bring you the gift of gifs from Mars.

Captured here in high-contrast black and white film, just like in the olden days, Mars' dunes are spotted moving, just as sand dunes do here on earth.

Nathan Bridges, lead author and planetary scientist at the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory said: "Mars either has more gusts of wind than we knew about before, or the winds are capable of transporting more sand."

"We used to think of the sand on Mars as relatively immobile, so these new observations are changing our whole perspective," he said.

Matthew Golombek, a co-author of the new paper published in Geology said: "Before the rovers landed on Mars, we had no clear evidence of sand moving."

When the Mars Exploration Rovers touched down on the red planet's surface in 2004, scientists were thrilled to see the rovers' track marks filling in with sand, much as they would on earth.

What will the first people on Mars do when they get there? Rolling down one of these immense dunes would be our pick.

The images were captured by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO).
