Former Police Officer Admits To Molesting 13-Year-Old Girl

A former Nottinghamshire police officer has pleaded guilty to five counts of molesting a 13-year-old girl.

Russell Dew, 44, faces prison after he admitted engaging in sexual activity with the young girl in Newark, Nottingham. He was told by the presiding judge at Nottingham Crown Court, Mrs Justice Macur, there was "only one possible outcome" in the case.

"I don't in any way patronise you that you would think otherwise", she said.

The court heard on Monday the judge would consider how much of a threat Dew, who is a father of four, poses to the public when he is sentenced on 19 December.

The former inspector, who is originally from Melbourne, Australia, hung his head during the hearing and held blue rosary beads, the Nottingham Post reported.

The offences which occurred between 11 February and 31 August 2010, involved Dew being filmed as he lay handcuffed on the floor. Dew, who also admits touching the girl's leg, was suspended this year when the incidents were uncovered. He finally resigned on 18 August this year.

Detective Chief Inspector Dianne Heydon said the nature of the offences went "against everything the role of a police officer stands for".

“Safeguarding children is a priority for the force and yet Dew took opportunities outside work to target his victim and take advantage of her," she said.

“We have been supporting the victim and her family through this difficult situation, and I am pleased that today’s plea spares the need for a prolonged trial.”

The local paper added it "did not believe" Dew had met the girl while on duty.
