Weather: Northern Britain To Be Battered By 85mph Winds

Parts of the country are set to be lashed by winds of up to 85mph, forecasters have said.

A deep low centred over the Orkneys will bring strong winds over Northern England and Scotland, with the strongest gusts predicted.

Gemma Plumb, a forecaster with the MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "We have seen gusts of up to 56mph along the East Coast (on Saturday) and it looks like they will get progressively stronger."

She continued: "We are expecting gusts of up to 70mph over the Pennines.

"The winds will be strongest across Scotland and the Northern Isles where the gusts could reach 80 to 85mph.

"There is a deep low pressure system over the North of the UK.

"It is quite usual for this time of year."
