Google Doodle Celebrates Mexican Artist Diego Rivera

The 125th birthday of prominent Mexican artist Diego Rivera is Thursday’s featured Google doodle, with a mural-style image depicting his homeland’s difficult history.

Born in Guanajuato in 1886, the artist created huge wall works in frescos, establishing what became known as the Mexico’s muralism movement.

A devout communist, his works were heavily inspired by the Mexican (1915) and Russian (1917) revolutions, often depicting working class and native figures in an heroic light.

Rivera is credited with bringing art to the Mexican masses, through works on large-scale public building. Later in life, the artist painted murals in the US, while the story of his stormy marriages with fellow artist Frida Khalo was made into a Hollywood film.

Rivera died in 1957, his works having found international acclaim.
