Severe Storms As Man Has Miraculous Escape From Falling Tree

It's been the windiest week of the year but with severe storms predicted and snow warnings for Scotland, Britons are bracing themselves for a fresh battle against the elements.

Weather extremes are set to continue as the Met Office has issued a yellow "be aware" warning for most of Britain.

More serious weather warnings were issued for eight regions in Scotland.

One man had a miraculous escape from a falling tree after stormy weather in Winchester, Hampshire.

Dozing in bed whilst listening to the squalls outside, former ambassador Richard Wilkinson was shocked when a 60 ft tree fell through the roof, catapulting branches and debris onto his mattress.

Luckily for the 65 year old, his wife was away, as the branches collapsed onto her side of the bed. Wilkinson escaped, only needing ear surgery.

Daughter Eleanor, 20 said it could have been so much worse. She told the Mirror:

"He was quite dazed and the electricity was off and he said one of the trees had fallen down.

"He was quite calm really and he called the emergency services, who came and managed to lift him out of the bedroom.

"The ambulance then came and mopped him up and he was taken to hospital.

"It was a really lucky escape."

Hampshire police said they had received 206 calls relating to fallen trees and floods in the last 24 hours , as opposed to their usual twenty.

In Devon, 70mph gusts were recorded, but the "the strongest winds of the week" are thought to arrive on Thursday or Friday.

Snow and winds have caused chaos on Scottish roads and while Scottish rail travel has also been disturbed. in Inverness, a fallen tree injured a passenger onboard train travelling from Wick causing delays to the service.

Transport minister Keith Brown has warned commuters to beware of further chaos on the roads. Last week there were 110 incidents on Scotland's major roads:

"However, the forecast does present another serious test for our systems and lines of communication. We cannot control the weather, and disruption cannot be ruled out, but the wide range of measures taken has paid dividends so far."
