A military prosecutor involved in the investigation into the plane crash that killed Polish president Lech Kaczynski shot himself in the head this morning just minutes after giving a press conference.
Mikolaj Przybyl apparently dismissed reporters, before adding: "Thank you, please give me a five-minute break, I need to rest."
Footage broadcast by TVN24 shows Przybyl walking across his office and out of sight before a gunshot is heard.
Colonel Przybyl survived and is now in a stable condition in hospital, the Krakow Post reported.
The apparent suicide attempt came on Monday morning after he had finished reading a statement to reporters defending the work of his office and rejecting planned reforms by Prosecutor General Andrzej Seremet to put military prosecutors under civilian authority.
Przybyl had earlier criticised leaks from the probe into the 2010 plane crash, which also killed 95 other people. He also rejected suggestions military prosecutors broke the law while investigating the crash.
Col Przybyl opened his conference in Pozan, western Poland with the statement: "During my entire service as a civilian and later military prosecutor, I have never brought shame to the Republic of Poland and I will protect the honour of an officer of the Polish armed forces and prosecution."
