Tonight's TV Pick: Wednesday - Freddy Flintoff: Hidden Side Of Sport

Wednesday

Freddy Flintoff: Hidden Side Of Sport - 10.45pm, BBC1

With the tragedy of Gary Speed's unpredictable end still very much in his huge number of fans' minds, this is a timely exploration of what has long been swept under the carpet amidst all the wealth, fame, inherent machismo and public adulation that surrounds modern sport - that is, the personal cost in mental welfare that can be felt by sportsmen (and women, although they do not feature in this programme) at the top of their physical game.

With contributions from boxer Ricky Hatton, cricketer Steve Harmison and former footballer Vinnie Jones, the programme is steered with authority by Freddie Flintoff, who shows his clearly vulnerable side as he discusses the pressures to stay on top of professional sport, with the deadweight of injury and a looming expiry date - as well as the stigma and fear of discussing any of this in public, lest the mask of sporting invincibility slide. Plus he takes on Piers Morgan (always good to watch), holding him to account for media headlines that criticise performance on the field without factoring in what this does to the players themselves.

How To Be A Good Mother With Sharon Horgan - 10pm, Channel4

The eternal juggling act between selfless motherhood and female fulfillment is given a fresh angle in this documentary, exploring how six 'superwomen' seem to have cracked it - in six very individual ways. One of the group even home-schools her brood of six, while running a business from the house. Bound to make any normal mum watching feel inadequate, this is a deceptively light-hearted piece, presented by comedy writer Sharon Horgan, that nevertheless makes the point - there is no such thing as one answer for this ongoing quandary for millions of mums - and dads.
