A 35-year-old man died in a crash after police attempted to stop the stolen car he was travelling in.
A Mazda MX5 hit some railings at around 11pm yesterday in Mill Road, Brighton, East Sussex.
The stolen car had sped off when it passed a stationary police patrol car near to Mill Lane, Sussex Police said.
The police car then followed the Mazda for a few seconds before it collided with railings.
The dead man, believed to be from Liverpool, was declared dead at the scene.
Two other men who were in the Mazda, aged in their 30s and from Brighton, were taken to the city's Royal Sussex County Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.
One of the injured occupants remains in hospital and the other has since been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and aggravated vehicle-taking.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been informed as a matter of course, a police spokesman said.
Chief Inspector Natalie Moloney, from the force's road policing unit, said: "We are in the early stages of the investigation to try and establish the exact circumstances that led up to this fatal collision.
"Officers are still in the process of trying to trace the deceased's next of kin."
