Joey Barton Attends Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting

Joey Barton's Alcohol Battle

Joey Barton has revealed he is attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

The footballer opened up to fans on Twitter, admitting he has lots to learn from the AA.

The star originally vowed to go teetotal in 2008 in a bid to save his soccer career but has been quiet on his alcohol issues of late.

Taking to the social networking site, the footballer wrote: "Am off out AA meeting and then back for the NFL."

When questioned by followers about what he meant by "AA", the sports star replied: "AA=Alcoholics Anonymous. Loads to be learned if u have a problem or not. Usually most do...or did! Like moi."

The 29-year-old Queens Park Rangers captain has had his problems played out in the public eye after he was sentenced to six months in prison for common assault in 2008 and the same year he pleaded guilty to an attack against his Manchester City teammate Ousmane Dabo at the team's training ground.

He also stubbed a lit cigar out in the eye of Manchester City youth player Jamie Tandy and was fined £60,000 - the equivalent of six weeks' wages for the incident.

Speaking about his issues, Joey said: "I am no different because I kick a ball and am known. I have many failings."

The star later revealed he decided to speak out about his AA visits in a bid to help other people.

He said: "Decided to comment on AA, as its important that people know its ok. That they don't have to struggle through life alone. Am ok with it!"
